93-Year-Old SUV Driver Charged for Hitting Deputy
The accident took place yesterday afternoon while a Pasco County deputy was providing traffic control for another crash scene.
A 93-year-old Mansfield, Ohio, woman was charged with failure to use due care and driving around a detour with police cars following yesterday’s crash on State Road 54 at Wiggins Drive.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Fern Botdorf was driving a 2011 Dodge SUV when the accident occurred around 3:30 p.m. Dec. 18. She was traveling east on State Road 54 and was in the left turn lane, approaching Wiggins Drive when she struck a Pasco County deputy who was handling traffic control that was required due to a previous accident at the intersection.
Botdorf, a highway patrol report said, failed to see Deputy Raymond Meddaugh, 44, and struck him with her vehicle.
Meddaugh was taken to the Medical Center of Trinity with minor injuries. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office said he was treated for injuries to his left leg. Botdorf was uninjured in the crash.
The previous accident involved an overturned truck and trailer. A stretch of State Road 54 was closed for several hours due to the crashes.
