Cold Weather Coming to New Port Richey

Pasco County plans to open its shelters this weekend.

A cold front expected to arrive in Central Florida over the weekend has Pasco County emergency managers on guard.

With temperatures expected to dip into the 30s early Sunday morning and again Sunday night, they’ve decided to open cold weather shelters.

“These low temperatures and wind chills are dangerous to anyone who will be outside for a long period of time,” according to a Pasco County Office of Emergency Management media release. “Children, the elderly and pets are especially vulnerable to the cold and extra care should be taken to protect them.”

According to the National Weather Service, there is a 60 percent chance of rain this evening. Saturday will see highs around 70 before the temperatures start to drop. Overnight on Saturday, the lows in Pasco will creep down into the 30s. While sunny weather is expected on Sunday, the high should only reach the upper 50s with a low near freezing in the evening hours.

To make sure the homeless and those with inadequate heat have a warm place to go, the county anticipates these shelters will open up at 6 p.m. on both Saturday, Feb. 11, and Sunday, Feb. 12:
