DUI Arrestee Tried to Give Trooper Bank Card, Batteries

The New Port Richey man refused field sobriety tests.

When a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper asked Jon Baker for his driver’s license and registration, he included a bank card and a baggie containing batteries in the mix.

According to a FHP arrest report, the trooper pulled Baker over around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 2 following a complaint by another motorist of an “impaired driver” on State Road 55 at High Street. When the trooper tried to pull Baker over, Baker pulled into a McDonald’s drive-through and stopped.

The trooper went ahead and asked for Baker's license and registration. Baker, according to the report, spent several minutes looking and then handed over his license, a bank card and a bag of batteries.

At this point, the trooper asked Baker to get out of the car. When he tried, he forgot to put the vehicle in park and it started rolling toward the trooper's car. The car was stopped before a collision happened, the report said.

A New Port Richey police officer eventually removed the car from the drive-through lane.

Baker refused field sobriety tests, the report said, but was charged with DUI. He also refused blood alcohol testing at the jail.

Baker, 29, of 4956 Harbor Villa Lane was released from the Land O’ Lakes jail on his own recognizance.
