Five Things to Know Today: Thursday, July 21

Five things New Port Richey residents should know as we inch closer to the weekend.

1. Weather: Per AccuWeather.com, today will pretty much be a repeat of Wednesday. Temperatures will be pleasant in the low 70s when you awake under clear skies. After you arrive to work the temperatures will rapidly soar, hitting 92 by noon which is the expected high. It will be partly sunny all day with little if any chance for rain after work.

2. Free computer tech help: There's that wonderful word again, "free." From 6:30-9 p.m., residents can drop by Room 1 at the to get answers to any computers issues at no charge.

3. Bingo!: Come play some Bingo at the American Legion Post No. 79. From 7-10 p.m. visitors can try their luck at Bingo. Refreshments will be served once the games get underway and during the break, there will be free coffee and donuts available.

4. Writers unite!: Aspiring Stephen Kings can gather at the today at 5 p.m. to network and critique their own work.

5. This date in history: Political and military leaders of the United States quickly learned the rebellion of the confederate states would not be won quickly when the first Battle of Bull Run took place 150 years ago today. The victory was so profound for the Rebels, that federal troops fled in a panic all the way back to Washington, D.C., some 30 miles away. ... Also on this date in 1925, John Scopes was convicted in Dayton, Tenn. for teaching evolution which was against the law in Tennessee in a court proceeding commonly known as the "Monkey Trial." ...  Former President Martin Van Buren, who served as the eighth president of the United States, slipped into a coma on this date in 1862. He would die three days later.
