Hurricane Sandy Wreaks Havoc on Bay Area Travel
The storm’s impending impact on the Northeast is affecting flights out of and into Tampa International Airport.
Just because Hurricane Sandy has passed the Tampa Bay area by doesn’t mean she’s not having an impact on the region.
An estimated 76 cancelations have been logged at Tampa International Airport for Monday. Nearly half of those cancelations are departures, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
TIA’s website has a simple message posted for travelers:
Multiple flights to and from Tampa International Airport have been canceled for Monday, Oct. 29 due to Hurricane Sandy. Travelers should check with their airline before going to the airport.
Sarasota Bradenton International and St. Petersburg/Clearwater International airports have not posted Sandy-related messages for travelers on their websites. People flying out of these airports for destinations in the Northeast, however, should check with their airlines.
The Honor Flight out of St. Petersburg/Clearwater on Oct. 30 has been postponed, according to the airport’s website because of anticipated storm conditions in the Washington, D.C., area.
Hurricane Sandy is currently off the coast of North Carolina and has maximum sustained winds of 75 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm is an estimated 800 miles across and is expected to make landfall between Delaware and New York sometime later on Monday.
It is currently unclear whether Sandy will continue to impact travel to the Northeast into Tuesday.
