Not everyone is rolling out the red carpet for Gov. Mitt Romney's visit to Land O' Lakes Saturday.
When the Republican Presidential hopeful arrives in town, he'll be greeted by protesters donning Barack Obama for President T-shirts and carrying signs.
A "counter rally" is being organized by the United School Employees of Pasco. The union wants to raise awareness about the plight of public schools, said Kenny Blankenship, the group's vice president.
"The biggest thing is we want to get our message out there that our legislative officials need to make our schools a priority," Blankenship said Friday morning. "Our funding is less per student than it was in 2007. They just need to fund public schools appropriately."
To find out more about Romney's visit and for ticket information, see Romney Coming to Land O’ Lakes Saturday.
Blankenship said the union supports Obama for re-election, but is hoping the counter rally will make Romney aware of the issues facing public schools.
"We want our schools to be a priority," he said.
The Pasco union has invited its counterparts from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Hernando counties to attend and show their support for the cause. Blankenship is unsure if they'll come at this point. He also doesn't know where protesters will be allowed to assemble; he's expecting it will be along Land O' Lakes Boulevard or Gator Lane.
Union supporters are meeting at the organization's Land O' Lakes office, 21322 Lake Patience Road, at 4 p.m. Oct. 27 to prepare for the rally. Officials are asking supporters to make signs. Obama T-shirts will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Romney takes the stage at Land O' Lakes High School, 20325 Gator Lane, at 7 p.m. Oct. 27. The security gates open for ticketholders at 5 p.m.
Students Also Have a Voice
While school workers plan their protest, students are also organizing against Romney. Land O' Lakes High senior Zach Conn has created the closed Facebook group "Students Against Romney."
As of 9 a.m. Oct. 26, that group had 225 members.
Patch blogger Anjonette Hall recently wrote about the high school-based group.
It is unclear if students will join the protest.

Shouldn't that mean that they should be protesting at the current office holders rally see as they are responsible for the last 4 years of funding?

I think Mr. Blankenship and his "Anti-Romney" protesters are fools. We are in this position because we have had four years of NON-action and handouts that are taking resources away from the economy. How much do the free cell phones given out cost? How much did Cash for Clunkers cost? How much do all of the freebies cost? On top of that, for teachers they seem to be less informed and educated on issues. For instance, watch a debate, the main reason we are in this mess is because of the banking industry. SO Obama regulates the banks (needed) yet does not follow through and tell the banks what a good loan is versus a bad loan, so the result is that banks will not give ANYONE a loan. The economy is driven by people spending money, so if there are no loans, there is no money being spent. YOUR President Obama is a neophite, and criticizes Mr. Romney for being naive? THAT is funny, what was Obama when he was elected? He certainly was not a world policy pro when HE was elected. Obama is NOT the answer, and maybe Mitt isn't either, but I am willing to give him a shot, especially since Obama has done NOTHING with his four year "shot". Teachers want more resources and money, then the economy has to be revived, and revived for REAL, not with some mullarky filled unemployment numbers that are conveniently released AFTER Obama has his butt handed to him in the first debate. In the "real" world if you fail at your job you get fired, well Mr. President, You're FIRED!

I'm not really political but it they are at the same rates as 2007 that means that Obama did NOTHING to improve things so why exactly are they trying to reelect him??? Why not give someone a 50/50 shot at fixing things...worst case we're right where we are now......right?

"Our funding is less per student than it was in 2007. They just need to fund public schools appropriately." Hello!!!!!! Obummer was elected in 2008. It is under his reign that nothing has been done. Why not give someone else a chance? Is this just about Republican or Democrate or is it about the future of our Country. As it stands now we know for sure that NOTHING is being done. At least with someone else in office we can hope that things will change. The teachers, all educators, and certainly our children deserve better.

Obama supporters are like sheep being led to slaughter. I see a student has a closed group on facebook are the afraid of discussion or differerent view. I see how they have been brainwashed by teachers and the unions

What is the funding amount per student? Why does it need the increase to cover and by how much. Those are my first two questions.
Because based on the Pasco County Schools own webpage it sounds like things have improved without the additional funding.
"The District also saw a reduction in the percentage of students scoring in the lowest category (a level one) on their Advanced Placement exams (from 27% to 23%). This year, 10 of 13 high schools increased their percentage of students scoring a level 3 or higher. The District is especially proud of Gulf High School, which secured a 15% increase in students scoring 3 or higher (from 59% to 74%), the highest percentage in the district. The following schools also exceeded the state average of students scoring a level three or higher, while increasing enrollment in Advanced Placement courses: River Ridge High School, J.W. Mitchell High School, Land O’ Lakes High School and Wiregrass Ranch High School."
We all must cut spending .. schools are not an exception to the rule. Cut the unnecessary programs in the schools, concentrate on them mastering language, speech, math and science.

Everyone has a right to protest! This is the USA. I would be out there protesting if President Obama came. I am more concerned that they keep their opinions to themselves during school hours and at school sponsored events.

How could anyone believe the president would care about teachers when he didn/t care about our Ambassador and even told those who wanted to help to "stand down". Absolutely heartbreaking.!!! And how come Fox News is the only Journalists brave enough to let us know about all this?? And how come women aren't outraged by the disgusting new Ad about a girl's first time?

I think that they are protesting the Republican Party more than Gov Romney. Florida has been run by a total Republican government. The Gov,the House and the Senate are and have been for as long as I can remember, Republican. With States Rights this is swhere all funding comes from. And of course we are way overtaxed. Seriously?
So I agree with most of you, give someone else a chance to make our state a better place to live and raise children. Vote Democrate for your local and state offices. They have way more power in Your lives then the President who ever wins.

Do the members of the Teachers Union believe in reaching across the aisle for the good of the students or do they believe in being lemmings to Union leadership? Remember, behind the curtain no one sees how you vote. Take your power back.

I saw Obama yesterday claiming the new job numbers are proof that his policies are working and that we are in an economic recovery... Fact is, that is not the truth, or even close to the truth...
First, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9% and the year-to-date monthly average of 157,000 payroll jobs is barely enough to keep up with population growth -- much less make up for the 8 million jobs lost during the Great Recession.
Second, the so-called real unemployment rate (U6) remains elevated at 14.6%, albeit down from 14.7% the prior month. Similarly, the labor participation rate is at 63.8%, up from its multi-decade low but still incredibly weak.
Third, average hourly earnings fell a penny in October and average hours worked fell to 34.4 from 34.5 in September.
Stagnant wages means "we're not generating income," Reinhart says. "That's a problem in terms of the durability of an economic expansion, which is usually fueled by consumption. To get consumption you've got to generate income."
Also, just look at your checkbook. We are paying a lot more for everything now than we did in 2008. The price of gas has doubled. At the same time, wages have gone down, and that's if you're lucky to have a job.
In 2008, 25 banks went out of business. In 2012, 48 banks have gone out of business. Almost double the amount. Does that sound like recovery to you? Don't believe the Obama lies!!
