Texting on West Pasco Roads: Should it be Illegal?

The Florida Senate is once again considering joining the 39 states that have already outlawed the act on their roads.

West Pasco motorists who like to cruise down area roads while sending text messages to their friends might soon find themselves on the wrong side of the law.

The Florida Senate is once again taking up a bill that would ban texting-while-driving, according to The Tampa Tribune.

While the state’s Legislature has tried to ban the act in the past and failed, proponents of the measure keep bringing it back up.

If the bill makes it through the Legislature, it would make texting behind the wheel a secondary offense, the Tribune reported. That means police would have to have another reason to pull a driver over to be able to issue a ticket.

According to Forbestexting-while-driving is linked to 11 teen deaths a day. It’s also blamed as a root cause behind 25 percent of the accidents in the country for a total of 1.6 million a year.

If you are so stupid to text and drive, I hope you crash into a pole and kill yourself before you kill me, my family or some other innocent.

Can we please discontinue the "according to" and have it straight from "The Patch?"
At least get the facts straight.......the copied stats are misleading and unfactual.

And for those who believe the roadways are becoming more dangerous due to texting......the numbers do not lie.......considering I haven't actually witnessed an uptick in accidents since the dawn of the texting generation, I figured I would check out some statistics from the Florida DMV.

Recorded crashed per day.....Govt statistics.
1995----626
1996----660
1997----659
1998----672
1999----667
2000----674
2001----704
2002----686
2003----667
2004----691
2005----736
2006----702
2007----702
2008----665
2009----646
2010----645
2011----625

The years 95-98 yielded more average crashes per day at 654 than the last 4 years of data, which averaged 645 per day.

****The pretexting years of 1995-1998 produced more traffic crashes per day than the last 4, which have seen an overwhelming increase of texting while driving******

Heck, 2011, the state had it's LOWEST number of traffic crashes in nearly 20 years. The 2012 numbers should be available soon; I'll be curious to see what they yield.

Instead of trying to ban every possible thing that can cause bad driving, why not just start enforcing the rules of the road? Ticket people who drive dangerously whether the reason for it is texting, playing with the radio, or just being an all-around awful driver. I know the police can't be everywhere, but the number of people who don't seem to think that the traffic laws apply to them is terrifying.

Yes, at least have a law on the books that texting while driving is illegal. Got to start somewhere. It took a while to realize that seat belts while driving saved lots of medical treatment costs for us as a society and that driving a motorcyle while wearing a helmet did the same, despite those who felt that their rights were being controlled to much. When it comes to just being practical and cost effective, that should drive the decision making. Thanks, Nancy

I cannot believe that we do not have a no texting and phone use while driving law. I don't understand who or what is preventing our state legislature from passing this urgently needed law. Even one death or accident attributed to phone use is too many.
Since when is the convenience of using a phone in a car more important than a human life? Give me a break, this is a non sequitur, phone use while driving is dangerous and distracting and should never have been allowed.

A secondary offense while texting and driving??!!!!! What is wrong with our lawmakers??!!! Why can't they make it a primary offense?!!!!

I'm watching this girl texting next to me as she swerves into my lane on Rowan Rd. I drive up ahead of her to stay away. I come to a stop at Plathe in the left lane. The cars from Plathe come and make a left onto Rowan Rd.. Up Rowen now comes this girl, I see her and she is not stopping. Through the red light while texting. Thank God those cars saw her and stayed to the left. She is one lucky girl. She kept going, no clue that she could've been in an accident or worse.
