Want to Help Clean Up the Hacienda Hotel?

The city is looking for volunteers to help with a community project at the historic property.

City officials want to get the Hacienda Hotel cleaned up, and they are looking for volunteers to assist with the effort.

The city is planning a community cleanup day for the Hacienda that pulls in community groups and other willing volunteers from the area.

Want to help?

Interim City manager Susan Dillinger is building a list of volunteers and potential donors who want to aid in the effort. The date has not been announced yet, but one city council member has proposed the project take place the first or second Saturday in January.

Parties interested in volunteering for the cleanup or donating to it can email Dillinger at dillingers@cityofnewportrichey.org. They can also call the city manager’s  office at 727-853-1021 and give Marilyn Mercado their contact information.

City leaders are also poised to vote tonight to vote on a resolution to end current negotiations with the potential developer of the hotel property. The meeting takes place at 7 p.m. tonight, Dec. 4, at city hall.

Have an idea what the city should use the Hacienda for? Share it in the comments section.

Maybe a B&B would be a nice idea and also bring revenue to the city. Small and personal is what a lot of travelers (and locals) would like instead of those "generic" motels/hotels on U.S. 19.

I would love to see the Hacienda turned into a B&B and restored to it's original decor.

community center..the park is right there and it would be a great place to have 'mommy and me' classes, dance classes, art classes something to get the children involved in something positive and off the street

The B&B idea sounds wonderful, so does some kind of community center, like to have the mommy and me and such as mentioned above. I don't know in this area with this economy how well a B&B would do, it would be nice though.

THANK YOU council members for hearing the voice of we residents.
When I heard this news yesterday, it brought SUCH a smile to my face!

I advocate for a community center
and look forward to playing a role in the renewal of the building,
whatever we do with it!

I agree with Elizabeth Greer. Great idea to keep the kids of the streets and involved in the community.

Ive heard the hotel has paranormal activity. It would be interesting to participate and see if anything "abnormal" goes on during the cleanup...
