What Should Take the Place Of Community Hospital?

What do you do with a nearly empty property?

Patients at what was once known as Community Hospital have been moved out of New Port Richey and into Trinity.

Hospital staff spent Tuesday transfering 112 patients to the new Medical Center of Trinity campus on State Road 54.

The first patient arrived at 7:05 a.m. to the new campus, where a five-story hospital building houses 236 all-private patient rooms. HCA, which owns the former Community Hospital and Medical Center of Trinity, has been spending nearly 18 months planning the transition.

On Tuesday evening, the hosptal sent out a press release stating:

The culmination of almost 18 months of planning for this patient move went smoothly and without incident. ...

Medical Center of Trinity is grateful to Medfleet Ambulance Service, AMR Ambulance Service, Pasco County EMS,  the nursing students at Rasmussen College, the hospital volunteers, the many vendors on hand to support their technology and equipment, and the hospital’s healthcare team.

Community Hospital, now known as Medical Center of Trinity’s West Campus, is now mostly empty, and its signs are covered up. A psych ward continues to operate on the property, and hospital admins plan on continuing physical and occupational therapythere.

The question now is: What should fill the vacant space? And what about the businesses that occupy the same area and could be affected by the move?

It’s still unclear. Businesses have expressed concern to the Tampa Bay Times, and Patch readers have expressed frustration with the move.

The city would like to see redevelopment of the property, which City Manager John Schneiger has raised the prospect that the city partner with the Medical Center of Trinity to determine how the empty property can be used. There's not  a lot of other ways to use a former hospital building.

Schneiger said he has talked to Leigh Massengill, CEO of the Medical Center of Trinity, about partnering for a study that looks at what could fill the vacant space.

“They’re optimistic” about participating, he said. “There’s no commitment at this point.”

Pasco County’s development department has also expressed interest in lending resources to such a plan.

But what do you think should go there, readers? What realistically could be sustainable in the neighborhood?

We want to know. Tell us in the comments.

Did someone at some in sensitive hospital forget to tell him about "Penny Medical". Also If you aren't employed and have no means of paying for treatment the hospital will file the form and get reimbursed by medicaid.

In this day of out of control drug and alcohol abuse we have 7 Florida residents a day dying from rx drugs. Our community is not immune to this. Creating a good drug/alcohol rehab center that will take our residents first would serve our community in many ways. One thing we wouldn't have to worry about is if there are enough customers.

most insurances cover programs for weight control and it's NOT CRAP when it helps to keep people from getting diabetes or a heart condition that would further jam up the regular hospitals and put more stress on our ambulance corp

Derek, Thank you for posting this. I like the idea of moving the playground to the other side of Sim Park. Lot of information here for folks that want to be involved.

Tear it all down, why do you think they moved in the first place, the building itself needs to go. How about a farmer market? I borrowed that idea from my friend Susan, Build it and they will come

A regional farmers market would be great, and a way to attract people from outlying communities to NPR. We had a regional market in Syracuse NY when I was growing up and it was a fun destination on Saturday mornings. The regional market in Syracuse is still going strong.

All too often the farmers markets cause alot of traffic problems and don't bring in a bulk of out of towners to help boost the economy and other local businesses They're good for the locals but I think we need something more inviting to a larger spectrum of people.

How so on the traffic? Could be great destination for all. Other businesses: Bars,Restaurants, gas stations, What other great things do we have as a destination besides the Recreation Center and special events at Sims Park?

most of the farmers markets I've gone have a huge showing first thing in the morning when all the restaurants and such want to get what's necessary and freshest for their day-thereby causing an excessive amount of trucks in the area at the same time
