The four-piece group from Pasco and Pinellas is preparing to tear it up during Rockus Maximus.
Eight bands enter, but only one can walk away the victor of Rockus Maximus. Talk to the guys behind Hang ‘Em High and it becomes clear they’re in it to win it. With two members from Palm Harbor, one from Holiday and the final from St. Petersburg, the four-piece band says it has the style and presence to wow the crowds during Pasco County Libraries’ Rockus Maximus 16. Rockus Maximus is the library system’s annual battle of the bands. It’s designed to give young bands a forum to play while also providing them an opportunity to walk away with some serious prizes, including free recording time at Clearwater’s Clear Track studios. The film is going to be one of eight movies in the Gasparilla International Film Festival’s Narrative Feature Competition.
Trinity resident Lawrence Feeney recently gave us some more good news about his movie Pharmboy. The film, which was shot in Pasco County, is going to be one of eight movies in the Gasparilla International Film Festival’s Narrative Feature Competition. We learned a while ago that the film got into the festival, but it was just announced recently which festival competition it would participate in. The Gasparilla International Film Festival runs March 19-24. Pharmboy will have its festival premiere at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, in Tampa and will run again at 2 p.m. on Sunday March 24. The Pasco County Library System's annual battle of the bands features an online contest in addition to the March 22 competition.
There are multiple fronts to this musical showdown, and one battle just launched. Online voting for the 16th annual Rockus Maximus Battle of the bands opened Tuesday, Feb. 26. You can vote for your favorite band or bands now through March 22, said Paul Stonebridge, who runs the competition. The first-place winners of the online competition will score a $500 gift card to Encore Music in Port Richey, Stonebridge said. The runner-up nets a $250 gift card. Here's some classes for children who love to explore their creativity. The Progress Energy Art Gallery will offer Creative KidZone art classes with instructor Patty Reeves. Four of the eight bands in this year’s battle are set to perform Saturday, Feb. 23.
With bands coming from all over Pasco and Hillsborough counties, organizers say this year’s Rockus Maximus: Battle of the Bands 16 is going to jam. To show off some of the local talent, a free concert is being staged this weekend that will feature four of the eight bands lined up to battle it out in the final concert in March. Low Fuel Light, Orange Gravity, Heritage and Hang ‘Em High will take the stage at the South Holiday Library at 6 p.m. Feb. 23. The 4649 Mile Stretch Drive library is playing host to the first of two promo concerts featuring the bands. The slated acts were selected from a total of 17 that applied to take part in Pasco County Libraries’ annual battle of the bands. The production, now in its 16th year, pits local acts …

The Grammy Foundation is taking nominations for its first-ever music educator award and there’s $10,000 on the line for the winner.
They battle in the trenches every day teaching youngsters about Beethoven, Bach and the importance of proper form when signing or playing a musical instrument. In some students, they inspire a simple appreciation for music. In others, they foster a passion that leads them on a path toward life on the stage. Because of all they do, the Grammy Foundation says music educators rock and now it wants to honor them with a new award it intends to roll out next year.
