Close Gun Show Loophole

Since I moved to Pasco County  over twenty years ago I have seen this County come a long way in growth and improvements .  Many more businesses are available for locals to use in shopping and getting services,  improved roads , parks, schools and law enforcement.  Many large jobs accomplished to highlight the ability of the Commissioners courage to make good decisions based solely on what is right for Pasco.  The latest push by Sheriff Nocco to eliminate the selling of the dangerous new drug threat with Spice is an example for other Counties to act to control a bad situation before it can control us.

With this background of progressive and positive action I find it hard to understand why our County Commissioners would find it necessary to wait and see what actions  Pinellas or  any other Counties take on closing the loophole for purchase of firearms at gun shows.  Closing this loophole to make sure firearms are not going into the wrong hands by doing background check is really a no brainier and should be done without delay.  Just about everybody ,NRA members or not ,want to be sure we are not  letting individuals with a criminal history come into Pasco to purchase a gun they could not get in their own hometown.  Take action now to close the gun show loophole and make us all a little safer.

Why are so many people afraid of back ground checks? We must have a lot of people who are hiding skeletons in their closets. Most employers do a back ground check before they will hire you and that doesn't seem to brother a whole lot of people so what's the problem doing a back ground check when you are purchasing a firearm?

It always amazes me how the people that know the least about gun laws and the second amendment in general have the most to say about it. Have you even been to a gun show? It is not the place where criminals generally go to purchase weapons. Also, especially these days, the majority of the tables are gun dealers who do fill out the paperwork and do background checks. Yes, there are people who do have private weapons who attempt to sell their firearms at shows but all statistics show that very, very few guns purchased at gun shows ever end up being used in crimes. Florida does not "license" people to own guns and that is one of the reasons I live in Florida. I don't want any government to have access to the guns I own. It is none of their business! As far as background checks go, the only people who purchase guns without background checks are private individuals who purchase a firearm from another private individual. You nor anyone else is going to stop these purchases because it is impossible to monitor. Also, statistically speaking, the number of crimes from guns purchased this way don't even show up on the charts. If you want to help curb crime, study the statistics, everywhere there is a very high number of people carrying guns, crime is low. The more people that carry guns, the lower the crime. Moral of the story is, buy a gun, learn how to properly and safely use that gun and carry it with you at all times. Encourage your friends to do the same.

Yeah, Rick..this worked out well for the old west. Instead of being afraid of anything and everything, you can spend your time prepping your bunker for 'when it all goes down'.

Rick, That was an excellent comment and I couldn't agree more.
Most of these people commenting negatively have no idea what they're talking about and probably couldn't actually tell you how the "gun show loophole" works.

Rick you are totally wrong and all statistics show that people with guns are 2.7 times more apt to be killed by guns then those that do not have fire arms. You quote the falsehoods put out by the NRA about surveys that show states without controls of being among the safest all of which is hogwash. Florida rates as the fourth most violent state in the Nation with only Nevada, Tennessee and Louisiana beating us out for violence. We are also rated world wide as 88th for peacefulness with 87 other countries rating as safer and less violent then us and the majority of those Countries have some form of unified gun control. There is no doubt in the minds of 74% of the population that assault style weapons should be banned from homes and over 80% of all citizens of the US support background checks and licenses to have other types of firearms in homes. It is not impossible to monitor gun sales and ownership, it is done all over the world with success by Countries that are far less technically adept then we are. Also your comment that you moved to Florida because of our lack of controls makes me all the more convinced that Florida must get sane controls in place quickly, what we don't need is individuals that move here to take advantage of the wide open availability of guns , that just goes along with the individuals that come here to get illegal drugs. Not a really laudable reason for relocating to this state. A start to sane control would be to close the gun show loophole.

Rick thank you for the information - I am glad to see someone standing up to the false statements of the gun grabbers. While background checks are a good thing - the "Gun Show Loop Hole" is for private transfers as you mention and they can happen anywhere. Most gun show purchases - I have done several - already require a background check.

The myth that guns have a "wide open availability" is not only incorrect but a dangerous statement to allow. Maybe closing the "Gun Show Loop Hole" should be followed by requiring a permit to make a false statement - something to think about when trying to take away a right someone else cares about - yours will be next!
