If you go all the way back to my very first blog post (June 16, 2011), you'll notice that the cover photo for that entry is of the Seaside Inn. For many of my friends, the Seaside Inn has been much more than just a little tucked-away bar & grill on the water; some of them quite literally call it home, others a figurative second home, still others an amazing destination spot for some of the best live music the West Pasco area has to offer.

As for me? It was arguably the place that kickstarted my music career into high gear. In 2010, when I was playing with Circle Sky, Donny & Chrissie (owners of the Seaside Inn) took a chance on us. Before playing the Seaside, we weren't booking very often, and when we were, it was usually at our old stomping grounds, the Boulevard Lounge. In early 2010, we played a set there as a 3-piece, and the people there loved it. Afterwards, Donny asked us if we'd be interested in playing a benefit concert they were setting up for Dave Muse--former member of the Marshall Tucker Band and Firefall, and good friend of theirs--who was battling cancer at the time.

Circle Sky founding member Mark Alan had a close personal history with family members battling cancer, so this cause was near and dear to his heart. Without hesitation, he agreed for Circle Sky to play the benefit. We pulled no punches in trying to make our set as good as possible. That one concert would make us mainstays at the Seaside Inn. Even after Circle Sky underwent its lineup changes, all the former members still play at the Seaside (myself included), and Circle Sky itself will actually be there this Saturday.

This business relationship also meant that we became very close with the entire staff as well as the owners. So close, in fact, that when it came time to plan my wedding last year, we could think of no better place to hold the reception/afterparty than at the Seaside. The owners were fully on-board with helping us out in any way they could. Ultimately, the weather forced us to relocate our actual ceremony, and on Chrissie's insistence, we ended up having the entire wedding at the Seaside, with the ceremony and half of the reception happening in their upstairs restaurant area and the other half of the reception and the afterparty happening downstairs in the main building. In many ways, it was actually better to have done it that way. I have almost 1500 pictures totaling about 5.5GB on my hard drive to prove it.

So, at this point, you're probably asking, "Tim, why the hell are you suddenly gushing about the Seaside Inn?" Well, as some of you are aware of, since last year they had been dodging rumors that they would be closing at the end of February. Earlier this month, it almost looked like it was actually going to happen. Donny and Chrissie were having trouble working out a renewed lease agreement with SunCruz (the owners of the property where the Seaside is built). At the 11th hour, the lawyers of both parties negotiated a deal that everyone could be happy with, and shortly afterward, the Seaside proudly announced that they would remain open.

For those of us in the local music scene, the saying "we dodged a bullet" is a huge understatement. There are very few spots in the West Pasco area that host live music with the level of talent that the Seaside does, and even fewer that host live music as often as the Seaside does. Had they closed, not only would it have put many musicians out of work, but also a huge staff of bartenders, servers, cooks, and fishermen/shrimpers.

So, for anyone who hasn't been to the Seaside Inn yet, it's definitely time to go and see what all the fuss is about. I'll be playing a solo show there Thursday (today, by the time this post is published!), and this weekend, they have all-female rockers Undercover Betty on Friday, my former band Circle Sky on Saturday, and soon-to-play-the-SXSW-festival The Bearded Brothers on Sunday. See what I mean about that whole "level of talent" statement?
