Musicians Wanted for Hacienda Restoration Benefit

Ed Isolani is looking for folks to make music that could help raise money.

Could musicians help raise money toward rejuvenating the Hacienda Hotel?  That's a question Ed Isolani wants to answer. He's planning a musical event at Mezzaluna Pizzeria in downtown New Port Richey where people can donate money toward efforts to restore the city-owned Hacienda. And, he’s looking for performers who want to play for free. He is planning an event for June 20, and is considering continuing it on the third Thursday of subsequent months.  During the event, planners will collect donations to help move the now-vacant Hacienda’s revitalization forward. Isolani said that the money could go toward an engineering study for the building. The Hacienda opened for business as a hotel in 1927 and was once used as an assisted living …

Jody - that's the idea. Third Thursdays @ Mezzaluna will feature local acoustic talent and all the tips/donations are earmarked for the project. The Olde Folkers play every Thursday from 6:30 - 8:30 but we decided that the 3rd Thursday project was a great way to raise monies for the study to try and save this great building AND introduce the community to some of our wonderful area talent. Main Street Businesses Showing Signs of Life

Work is being done on a property city officials say might become a grocery market and cafe, and an antique shop is getting ready to open its doors.

It appears something new is developing at the old service station at the corner of Grand Boulevard and Main Street in New Port Richey.   Construction equipment has been a frequent sight on the property at 5731 Main St. recently. The property was purchased from John and Carolyn Herig this past September for $350,000. Turksavas Bektas and Teoman Markal now own it, according to Pasco County property records. City staff says the proposed use for the property is a grocery market and cafe. Bektas was too tied up with getting the business ready to discuss plans right now, but Patch hopes to catch up with him later. That incoming business isn't the only one getting ready to open its doors along Main Street. A storefront on the corner of Main and …

New Barbershop Brings Old School Feel

J & M Barbers knows its way around classic and modern styles of mens' hair cuts

There’s a new barbershop in downtown New Port Richey, and one of its owners touts its “old school” style.   J & M Barbers opened its doors at 5734 Main St. this past fall. John Torrisi and Moe Moore own the shop.  The shop barbers know their way around a variety of styles for men and boys, including fades, mohawks, tapers, and dreadlocks. They also know how to tackle pompadours, slick backs and the good ole' hot towel shave, a traditional offering at barbershops. Torrisi used to own a barbershop at 6139 Ridge Road, Port Richey. Moore said he helped Torrisi open the business and cut hair there. That shop existed for about five years, Moore said.   Torrisi and Moore moved the shop to the Main Street spot and opened it this past November, …

Florida Estates Winery Is a 'Grape' Escape

The wine-making operation on State Road 52 is holding a wine festival Saturday, April 27.

For Ron Hunt, there isn’t a business card wide enough for all of his positions, both official and unofficial, at Florida Estates Winery. “(My) title is vice president, general manager, winemaker, dishwasher, plumber, electrician, yard man, vineyardist … everything,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve got lots of titles."  Hunt is the man behind the vino at the Land O’ Lakes winery, a small-production operation on State Road 52 that has been in business since December 2001. Florida Estates currently offers eight different bottles: plantation white, chardonnay (two styles), plantation blush, plantation red, orange, key lime, plantation spice and strawberry port. Each wine sells for $13.95, except the chardonnay and port, which fetch $15.95 and $23.…

City Exploring Tax Credit Financing for Hacienda

New Port Richey leaders want to see if tax credit incentive programs can help improve the historic downtown property or pay off some of its debt.

Could New Port Richey tap tax credit incentive money to fund improvements to the Hacienda Hotel or pay off the debt on the property? New Port Richey City Council members said during their Tuesday, April 23 meeting they want to explore the idea and authorized the city attorney to look into the matter. President Barack Obama signed into law this year an act allocating $7 billion over two years to the dormant New Markets Tax Credit program, which seeks to spur investment in low-income communities.   In its first 12 years, the program distributed more than $25 billion of tax credits nationally into business transactions that helped “leverage substantial private investment in new projects and business expansion,” according to a memo from city …

When I listened to the presentation at city council meeting, it sounded too complicated and time consuming to me. Might be digging us deeper into complications that we already have. It sounded like an accounting nightmare that would take a full time job expert to manage.   more ›

Taste of Cuba Comes to The Market Off Main

Juan De Sosa is bringing his popular style of Cuban food to the well-known New Port Richey establishment.

Juan De Sosa wants the taste of Cuba he brought to New Port Richey to live on.  That's why he brought his recipes for the popular Cuban food he used to sell in town to The Market off Main, just a bit away from where he used to do business. The market is now selling black beans and rice, Cuban sandwiches and other offer offerings, and it’s looking to add more of De Sosa’s dishes to the menu. He’s technically retired now from business, but he wants to see his “legacy” live on. He’s been teaching Market Off Main co-owner Rose Mohr and staff how to make Cuban food and sharing his advice and equipment. “I’m just here for my legacy,” he said. De Sosa is the founder of Juan’s Black Bean Deli, which opened in 1999 on the west bank of the …
