Patch Picks: Alternatives to Chasco Fiesta

Tired of the hectic? Here are some ways to escape the fiesta.

Don't want to go to the 11-day Chasco Fiesta? Why not explore on your own a bit?  Try something new or go to a different, smaller event. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

1. Rent a Pontoon Boat from Windsong Charters (4927 U.S. Highway 19, New Port Richey - (727) 859-0213). You can chip in with friends and get a half day rental, which accommodates 7 - 12 adults from $145 - $185.  Visit the Gulf islands like Anclote Key, see dolphins, picnic, fish or just soak up the sun.

2. Take in a show at the The Showcase Arts Foundation will perform "Waiting for Godot" at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 26,  and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 27. Donations of $10 are accepted at the door.

3. On Saturday, join a tribute to U.S. Army Sgt. Michael Rowe, who lost his life in the current war in Iraq.  The memorial marking the fifth anniversary of Rowe's death starts around 3:30 p.m. on March 26 at the home of father Dave Rowe, 4509 Edith Street, New Port Richey.

4. Explore nature at - (Plathe & Baker Rd
New Port Richey (727) 841-4563)  James E. Grey Preserve boasts 50 acre of wetlands and 30 aces of uplands. It has an exceptional array of wildlife and a boat ramp so bring your canoe or kayak.

5. Learn to horseback ride. (8118 Plathe Rd, New Port Richey (727) 514-5261) has horses gentle enough for the kids and paths deep into serene riverfront trails that will satisfy your soul with a nice dose of nature.

6. For something a little more active, try roller skating at Spin Nations Skating Center (8345 Congress St Port Richey, FL 34668 (727) 847-4336). Grab a few friends for "support"

7. Plan a beach party!  Be a "kid" again. Build a sand castle, play several rounds of volley ball and be sure to pack your favorite sandwiches and snacks. (4835 Green Key Road, New Port Richey) is a great place for your warm weather fun. Enjoy the water, friends and fun, and then, as the sun sets, stay for the nightly event, as an ever changing array of colors is reflected on the rippling waters of the Gulf.
