Viewfinder: Ride Through Central Park

Since 1991, a train has run through Largo's Central Park. Hop on board for a ride!

Over a bridge, through a tunnel, passed the playground, along a busy roadway and by a birthday party,  trains whistled through last weekend.

For more than 20 years, the public has had the option to ride the Largo Central Railroad on the first full weekend of each month. About five or six trains run with a volunteer crew of 20. The train rides last about 12 minutes. There is no charge but  the non-profit railroad appreciates donations to keep the trains running.

Largo Central Railroad President Warren Jamison said he has always been a railroad fanatic and the train was a dream of his along with John Beard.

A sign in the rail yard shares the mission of the train.

"The Largo Central Railroad, a non-profit organization, presents the history of railroading in miniature as part of an ongoing commitment to educating our nation's children."

Public train rides are the first full weekend of each month.
