Youths Win President's Volunteer Service Award
The New Port Richey Parks and Recreation Department Youth Advisory Board has been named as recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award. They won the gold level of the award.
Local youths received some special recognition recently.
The New Port Richey Parks and Recreation Department Youth Advisory Board has been named as recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The board won the gold level of the award. That level is available for groups that complete 1,000 hours of community service as a group.
New Port Richey’s Youth Advisory Board completed 1,992 hours of community service in 2012. That’s nearly twice the required amount.

Service projects the board completed include the following:
- Cardboard Camp-Out for the Homeless,
- Adopted a family at Christmas,
- MLK Day of Service Street Clean-Up
- Donated Blankets to a local soup kitchen,
- Discover the Preserve Evening Midnight Basketball River Clean
Each member of the committee received a certificate, a letter from President Obama and a gold lapel pin. Mayor Bob Consalvo presented the award.

“All these kids contributed almost 2,000 hours of service to this community,” Consalvo said.
Charles Timony, who has been on the Youth Advisory Board since it was founded in 2007, called the award an honor. He is a senior high school and intends to go to college.
“This is a wonderful thing to put on my applications and my resume, and so I’m just so thankful to be able to receive this award,” he said.
