Skin Care Salon Owner Sees Business Grow Downtown

Susan Ferguson said a move to downtown New Port Richey has brought her more core customers, and she wants to see more clients come in.

Susan Ferguson opened up shop in downtown New Port Richey a little over a year ago.

She had been offering skin care and waxing services in rented space at a hair salon elsewhere in New Port Richey when she learned the spot had opened up. It lured her with the opportunity to grow.

So Body Basics Skin and Body Care opened up shop at 6235 Grand Blvd., last May right next to an art gallery.

“When the place became available, I took the step to expand so I could offer more services,” she said.

Body Basics list of services now includes customized facials, anti-aging treatments, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, oxygen infusion, LED light, micro current face and body toning, full body wax hair removal including Brazilian bikini, and body treatments. An independent massage therapist also shares space with her.

Ferguson, a licensed esthetician, said she’s seen results from the move. She’s had more customers in her new location, and she wants to continue to grow.

Ferguson has been in the skin care business for over a decade and a half. She used to live in Colorado, where she opened her first salon in 1997. She moved to Port Richey in January 2010 after her husband retired from a job at the fire department in Grand Junction, Colo.

She loves her job and working in a people-based business.

She said though her business has grown, it’s not due to walk-by traffic. A good deal of customers find her online. She also retains a following from her old location.

Ferguson looks around the downtown New Port Richey area and can see the potential to fill in the empty storefronts. She wishes the city would market it more to attract small businesses and create an atmosphere that will encourage people to come to the neighborhood to shop.

“I would love to see this area grow,” she said
