Homeless Man Arrested for Kidnapping, Child Abuse Faces Another Charge

He sexually assaulted a 17-year-old girl, a police report says.

A homeless man charged with kidnapping and child abuse for a reported Nov. 8 attack on a 17-year-old girl in New Port Richey is now also facing a sexual battery charge.

According to the New Port Richey Police Department, the teen was in the area of the Main Street Food Mart around 12:14 p.m. when a man grabbed her and “forcibly took her to an abandoned apartment."

Once there, the man threw the girl on the floor and forced her to have sex with him, a Pasco County complaint affidavit states. The man told the girl he would kill her if she resisted, according to the report.

John Joseph McCarthy, 22, was arrested Wednesday and charged with kidnapping and child abuse. He was charged with sexual battery in connection with the case Thursday.

McCarthy is being held in the Land O’ Lakes Jail without bond.
