Paddling In Pasco Schools: Facebook Readers Respond

The controversial practice has been approved in one Florida school district already.

Earlier this week we brought you a story about Marion County School Board approving paddling in its schools for unruly students.

The measure approved on April 23, requires that principals first obtain standing written permission from parents, and get verbal permission before each paddling. A child can only be paddled – three hits on the rear – once a semester and those strikes must occur in the presence of a witness.

We asked New Port Richey Patch Facebook readers what they thought about the idea of introducing paddling into local schools. Here's what they had to say:

Jeremy Slater wrote "Not sure I see a problem with it. Curious as to what the argument against it would be."

Caressa Gray Al-Khateeb wrote "I think this may make a huge and positive difference in our students. The parents do have to get permission which I think is good. A lot of parents are against it and this way more people are happy."

Rhema Buker wrote "Something definitely needs to be done about these schools here....and something needs to be done about these brats that are out of control. But spanking isn't the answer...unless you are a parent of one of these brats. The problem isn't the school faculty as much as it's the parents...I am so shocked almost daily by what goes in my daughters' schools. I have one in middle school and one in elementary. I have never in my life, encountered so many children with such irresponsible parents! Why are 10, 11, 12 year olds roaming the streets, doing drugs, having sex, getting into fights, bullying other kids, stealing, drinking...etc.??? Where are their parents?????"

Roxie Spell wrote "No, they should force them to sit i a room for the full school day with NOTHING to do. ISS is too soft, but hitting teaches them to hit."
