Jump into the local food movement rebuilding local community wealth from the grassroots

In my previous Blogs I outlined a plan to create a new alternative local economy to the highly destructive industrial food system that is focused on making commodities for profit and sale, rather then nutritious healthy food for people to eat.

  1. Re-localizing our economy creates community wealth http://newportrichey.patch.com/groups/eric-stewarts-blog/p/bp--re-localizing-our-economy-creates-community-wealta872febb27
  2. New Port Richey Victory Gardens Popping up: http://newportrichey.patch.com/groups/eric-stewarts-blog/p/bp--edible-new-port-richey-victory-gardens-popping-upb92ef779f3
  3. Envisioning New Port Richey as an Edible City http://newportrichey.patch.com/groups/eric-stewarts-blog/p/bp--envisioning-new-port-richey-as-an-edible-city-perdd559b6f68

If you would like to get involved with this local food movement you can start ordering weekly from our online co-op market where we sell direct to consumers from local farmers. www.suncoastco-op.com

My Main statement is this; If we rebuild our local food economy we can grow the property values of New Port Richey and attract new people to our area who will bring wealth and value will continue to increase. If we advertised New Port Richey as a Garden town with strong ambitions to become local food sufficient we could encourage sales of properties around the City and in the City that would take care of the vacancy issue. This would increase the cities total taxable properties and generate income for the City of New Port Richey. Its up to us the Citizens of this community to decide what businesses we would like to develop we have to encourage entrepreneurship and the cities ideas of creating a business incubator is a great one!

Weekly we meet at the Tasty Tuesday events held at the New Port Richey Library on Tuesdays 10am-1pm 5939 Main Street in the courtyard. We have a grower table set-up along with other vendors selling fresh veggies and products made from our local growers.

On Saturdays we set-up shop at the West Pasco Habitat for Humanity Restore at 4131 Madison Street setting up a small farmers market 10am-2pm.  If you made orders on our online market you can pick up Noon-2pm.

SHIFT CHANGE is a documentary film by veteran award-winning filmmakers Melissa Young and Mark Dworkin. It tells the little known stories of employee owned businesses that compete successfully in today’s economy while providing secure, dignified jobs in democratic workplaces. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NK9SjSpRCcQ

We meet weekly at the West Pasco Habitat for Humanity at 4131 Madison Street 9am-Noon Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to volunteer at starting up an educational urban farm in the 1/4 acre plot behind Habitat. We are cultivating vegetables and experimenting with ways of growing food to produce for the co-op and sell to local people. We want a education facility where people can come in and learn multiple ways of growing their own food in their backyards.  You can come volunteer with us those days!
