The Free Word: It is Christmas in July!

My latest contribution to the Librivox collection is a recording of Washington Irving's classic Old Christmas: From the Sketch Book of Washington Irving.  As readers of this space know I am a fan of this great American writer.  This particular entry is a favorite not only because of its Christmas theme, but because it conjures up Christmases that have long passed into the collective memory.

Washington Irving's Old Christmas tells of an American's travels through England during the Christmas season. Through a chance meeting with an old friend he is able to experience Christmas in a stately manor house. Through his eyes as a houseguest he glimpses the uniquely British customs and celebrations of Christmas as it would have been experienced during the Middle Ages, rather than in the early 19th century.

When the Florida sun is blazing down and the air is moist with rain not fallen, what better way to escape the heat of the present than to experience the warmth of a Christmas past!  As with all Librivox recordings, the book is free of charge.  Just follow this link and you will enter a time and season that will cool your body but warm your heart: https://librivox.org/old-christmas-from-the-sketch-book-of-washington-irving-by-washington-irving/

Clocking in at literally a few seconds shy of two hours, my frequent collaborator Ann Boulais and I will hopefully bring a smile to your face and dislodge your own happy memories of Christmases past.

Enjoy!
