Health & Fitness

It Starts in Parks

July is Recreation and Parks month throughout the State of Florida.  It is a time to celebrate the impact that parks and recreation have on our community.  The various parks and the Recreation Center in the City of New Port Richey are jewels that many are unaware of.

Parks and recreation programs enhance our quality of life by contributing to a healthy lifestyle, creating a sense of community, improving health and fitness and providing safe places for people to play.  Whether you would like to participate in the traditional fitness center, or the theme park like pools, there is something for everyone.  There is even Yoga in Sims Park on the first Tuesday of every month hosted by the Cultural Affairs Committee, if you are looking for a change of scenery to your normal routine.

These programs also strengthen family unity, encourage social interaction, enhance creativity, and promote diversity.  Many events, both large and small, take place in our parks.  Birthday parties are often held under pavilions, and each morning you can see people walking around Orange Lake with their four legged family members.  Large events deeply rooted in our community such as Chasco Fiesta take place in Sims Park, and 4th of July wouldn’t be the same without Main Street Blast leading up to it.  These programs increase economic development, preserve our heritage, promote tourism, and reduce crime.

With our parks we develop a respect for nature and provide for environmental conservation of our natural treasures.  The James E. Grey Preserve has beautiful walking trails and boardwalks where you can see what Florida must have looked like centuries ago.  Just minutes away from U.S. Hwy 19, yet when you begin your walk you feel as though you’ve entered into another world.

We may not realize it, but our community Starts in Parks.  It is where memories are made, and lives are changed.  This month we urge you to get out and visit your parks, see what they have to offer.  Begin a journey with endless possibilities.
