Massive Sinkhole Forces Spring Hill Evacuations

The crater is estimated to be about 40 yards across and 30 feet deep.

One home remains evacuated in a Spring Hill neighborhood where a giant sinkhole opened Saturday gobbling up a good chunk of a local roadway, officials say.

The call about the sinkhole at Eldridge Road and Van Alley Way in Spring Hill came into the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office around 5:20 p.m. Saturday. The hole that opened was initially about 25 yards by 25 yards across and 30 feet deep, an email to media from the sheriff’s office stated.

The hole, however, continued to expand following the initial call, growing to about 40 yards across.

Sinkholes have been a concern in the Tampa Bay area for quite some time. Last year, a sinkhole opened up in the Brandon area, killing a man who was in his bedroom at the time. Several other sinkholes opened up in the eastern Hillsborough County area following that deadly event.

No one was injured as a result of Saturday’s sinkhole, sheriff’s officials said.
