New Port Richey Man Found Dead on Boat in Gulf

Police say Craig Carmichael was found dead on a boat off Durney Key.

A 48-year-old New Port Richey man was found dead on a boat anchored west of Durney Key, according to the Port Richey Police Department.

Police units journeyed into the Gulf of Mexico around 4:30 a.m. Sept. 16 when the United States Coast Guard, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission reported a vessel hadn’t returned to shore and was overdue.

A FWC unit found the boat near Durney Key and discovered the body of a man on board.

The Port Richey Police Department opened a death investigation and identified the body as that of Craig Carmichael, of New Port Richey, according to an email from the department. There have been no indications of foul play, but police still are investigating and have sent the body to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.

Carmichael was an involved community member who organized the cit'sy holiday boat parade. He wanted to make New Port Richey a better place and frequently offered suggestions on how to do so. He was owner of Suburban Feed and lived along the Pithlachascotee River.
