Updated: Funeral Held Today for Pasco Detective who Died of Cancer

Jason Gay died peacefully in the hospital Tuesday

The public is invited to the funeral of Pasco County detective Jason Gay, 28, today at 10 a.m. at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church (8400 Monarch Drive, Port Richey).

Gay, a detective in the property crimes division of the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, died of rectal cancer at Moffit Cancer in Tampa, on Tuesday, March 22.  Gay, of Port Richey, leaves behind a mother, Debbie; father, Willis; two younger brothers, Brian and William, a maternal grandmother and an aunt and uncles in Pasco County.

Gay's girlfriend Heather Tillis said he was diagnosed with the condition in March 2010.

Gay, of Port Richey, played hockey in a league with his brothers, according to an obituary from Dobies, and basketball, he bowled with father and friends, played softball and golfed.

"He was very athletic," Tillis said. "He loved life, and he made sure everyone knew." 

The funeral will be followed by a grave-side memorial service at Trinity Memorial Gardens at 12609 Memorial Drive in Trinity. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations are made to the Moffitt Cancer Center (12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, FL 33612.)
