Woman Arrested After Child Ejected from SUV

Crystal Rusaw was charged with leaving the scene of a crash and child neglect.

A New Port Richey police officer contacted a local woman on Monday morning about a crash.

The officer had learned that a green Ford Explorer SUV went off the road at 6827 Congress Ave. before dawn on March 25, struck a tree and flipped over. The airbag deployed, and the vehicle’s front end suffered major damage, according to an arrest report from the New Port Richey Police Department.

The vehicle was unoccupied when the police arrived, and a search with multiple officers and K-9 units failed to find the people who had been inside.

More than two hours later, the officer responded to a call for medical assistance.

Crystal Rusaw, 24, told the officer she had been the driver of the Ford. She said she lost control of the vehicle while talking on a cell phone.

She said she exited the vehicle and found that the 4-year-old boy she had been carrying in the rear passenger seat had been ejected from the Ford and had landed on the ground.

Instead of waiting for police or paramedics to arrive, Rusaw walked to her mother’s house on Rowan Road, the officer said.

The boy had scratches on his face. He was Bayflighted to a hospital after the call for medical assistance, police say.

The officer noticed Rusaw showed signs of impairment, in his report, and said he found an open bottle of Corona in the vehicle.

Rusaw, of 6600 Atrio Terrace, was arrested Monday and was charged with leaving the scene of a crash and child neglect. She remained in the Land O' Lakes Jail Tuesday in lieu of $5,000 bail.

These poor children are at the hands of irresponsible people. Corona, talking on cell phone and the child was probably not strapped in. Why wasn't he in bed sleeping instead of out with the mother doing whatever it was she was doing. Just because you are physically capable of producing a child, does not mean you should make one or if you do doesn't automatically make you a fit mother.

Did not remember her from last August until I went to site Hugh posted. Really, why was she allowed to get her children back after August 2012? Something is wrong with this picture. What is condition of the little boy? If he had to be airlifted and not taken in ambulance, it had to be serious! I pray he will be ok and that she does not get this child or the other little ones back! Where is their caseworker?

I wonder if we can find out what hospital the little boy is in send him something soes anyone know how or where he is?
Carole March 29, 2013 at 12:38 AM
Looked up another article and police have not disclosed which hospital the little boy was airlifted to. Maybe there will be an update in few days, or they are trying to keep him safe and will not disclose where he is. Can't blame them!

This whole family has problems with being intoxicated and being responsible. Placing the children with family members isnt a great option either. If you all only knew! Foster care saddens my heart but in this case it would be the only way all three kids will survive and not become phyco paths. Pasco''s finest. I watch PCSO give cudos to thier work all of the time, and hide the things that might give them a bad wrap, When the cat sneaks out of the bag like this we need to use it to make a point. Her children should have been gone, Slam the book to someone that needs to receive it. My son at 17 got arrested for stealing a chicken sandwich from Gulf High, when he was on free lunch, I dont think that stealing is OK but tell me why he did 2 years probation and this POS is still able to be alone with any of her children. Let her kill herself with her DUI. The simple fact that she tried to hide it by waiting a few hours till she sobered up and could try to make it seem like the boy was hurt another way. Horrible

The Pasco Sheriff is responsible for child protection team, they are the ones to contact and ask why these children haven't been taken from this lady, and protected from her.Praying the little boy is ok..

An why is the bail only $5000.00? Is that all this child's life is worth?
Ann Mongan March 31, 2013 at 01:56 PM
shes out already got out today wow .... wtf what a messed up legal system we have they give more time to jay walkers than child abusers
craig staenglen March 31, 2013 at 03:50 PM
I totally agree with you Sandra, yet the "State" does NOTHING to make sure that any child is safe, and the "State" makes it so dam hard for anyone to help these children with all there restrictions, classes, and monie's, they DON'T care about the children, all they care about is how much money and hassle's they put families thru that actually can, would and will give the child(ren) a good home with love, understanding, and willing to get the child(ren) the help they may need, and the stability that families can give, it really sucks, and it's extremely sad :0( A Loving Mother of Three
