City Council Elections: What Would You Ask the Candidates?

New Port Richey Patch is hosting a candidate forum and we want to hear about the issues that matter to you!

Still trying to decide which New Port Richey City Council candidates have your vote on April 9? Have a few questions you need answered first to help you make up your mind?

Have we got an opportunity for you!

New Port Richey Patch is hosting a candidate forum March 20. All seven prospects have confirmed they’ll be there and now we’re turning to you to help us make sure the questions asked are the ones that are on everyone’s minds.

You have two ways you can participate:

  1. Come out and ask your questions in person: The forum starts at 7 p.m. March 20 in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 5919 Main St. Just come out, fill out a question card and you might get to ask the candidates the questions that matter to you!
  2. Share your questions on the site – We know not everyone can make it out next week, so we’re also collecting questions in advance. Just share your questions or concerns below and we’ll try to get them answered for you.

Want to hear the candidates without turning out to the forum? The city plans to broadcast the forum on its cable channels: Bright House Channel 615 and Verizon FiOS Channel 20. New Port Richey Patch will also stream the forum live on the site.

Big thanks to Greater New Port Richey Main Street for helping us promote this event.

So, New Port Richey: What would you like to hear from the candidates? Be sure to comment below!

Over this last decade a lot of attention and money has been lavished on downtown. When does the rest of the town get that kind of treatment?

My question will be: Are running for city council for the money or to serve public interest? if so, give your salary to a charity organization, or to the SPCA, it will help them.

Is anyone concerned with the blight that is US 19 in NPR? It's an endless stretch of pawn shops, strip clubs and trashy motels populated with prostitutes and drug abusers. I'd gladly contribute my hard earned dollars to a municipal fund dedicated to buying these dilapidated properties and razing them. A vacant lot is preferable to providing a haven for the dregs of Pasco. It's an embarrassment and it invites crime.
I'd also like to see a regulation prohibiting the sign hawkers who stand just feet from traffic on US 19, spinning their "We Buy Gold" signs. Beside being a sad commentary on the immediate community, it's a distraction to motorists. Is this who we want to be?

The meeting on the new multi-use path connecting the Starkey Trail Extension with the Riverwalk is tomorrow at 9am...

It has been my experience that the council salary works out to something less than minimum wage. I don't believe ANYONE runs for council for the money.

Wow! NPR guy just nailed my biggest concern right on the head. Lets implement some city codes to turn around the stretch of US19 that is an absolute embarrassment. Get rid of the curbside rummage sales, hand painted signs that are stapled onto storefronts, and force landlords to keep up their property. Make it illegal to throw cigarettes out of your car so our intersections don't look like ashtrays. I could go on and on. You get 19 in order and business will find its way down there. What good is improving our downtown area if it is only going to be an island surrounded by a sea of scum? Does anybody care about the Leverocks property anymore?

I hope to see a great turnout on Wed. for the forum. It is great to see so many candidates running for the two open seats. I was asked to run by several residents who take great pride in New Port Richey. Having such a large field of candidates shows that our residents do care about our city and people are looking to make positive changes. I look forward to meeting all of the other candidates as well as fielding questions from concerned residents.
