Rock the Park 2013: A Review

This week, my personal take on the benefit concert that took place at Sims Park on the 17th & 18th.

People were asking me if I was going to write about the Rock the Park Benefit Concert after I saw it. I said I would, as it would be good publicity for the cause and may even encourage more people to go next year. But just recently, it dawned on me: In the entire time I've been writing this blog, I've given spotlights to bands and events, but never actually reviewed them or gave my personal opinion on them.

I guess there are a few reasons for this. For starters, my intention was always to promote rather than to act as a local critic, and I wanted live music fans and patrons to judge an event for themselves rather than go into an event with any kind of bias. But the flipside of not doing any kind of "reviews" is that those who may not be familiar with the scene don't have anything other than--essentially--another source of advertising/promotion for the event/band. In other words, it lacks a certain human element.

Well, let's change that right now!

Last week's Rock the Park Benefit Concert was something you really shouldn't have missed (but probably did). As I mentioned last week, this was the first time they did two nights, so I made sure to attend both (I took lots of photos, too; you can find them here and here).

The first night featured two bands: The Natural Blend Band and The Northwest. The Natural Blend Band is a 6-piece half-acoustic, half-electric jam band with a cool, folky vibe to them. They played a nice mix of original music and a handful of covers (including the crowd pleaser "Wagon Wheel" by Bob Dylan/Old Crow Medicine Show). Toward the end of their set, they invited host of the benefit concert Sean Kline to the stage, told him to pick up a djembe (a kind of hand drum), and they proceeded to jam for a couple final songs. All in all, the band had a very different vibe from the rest of the band lineup for both nights, but they were a perfect introductory band to get things kicked off.

The Northwest is a 4-piece indie/alternative rock band in the same vein as Interpol, The Killers, Coldplay, and other similar bands that draw their influence from 80s post-punk/new wave bands like Joy Division, The Smiths, and U2. Their guitarist (Dylan Buckley) is incredibly animated onstage, which provides a stark contrast to lead singer/bassist Derek Luna's stoic-but-powerful stage presence. Like Natural Blend, their set consisted of mostly originals with a couple covers (including an impressive rendition of Billy Idol's "White Wedding"). They put on a fantastic show with very solid original material.

Day 2 featured four bands: The Luvdogz, Sunshine & Bullets, Crash the Satellites, and Fight Another Day. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the park in time to catch The Luvdogz's set, but all the reports I heard from people said they put on a slammin' set. Their look and sound is owed to 80s hard rock/hair metal bands such as Poison and Mötley Crüe.

I did, however, make it in time for the second band of the day, Sunshine & Bullets. They are a 3-piece hard rock act whose sound is kind of hard to categorize. Why? Because their influences are incredibly wide-ranging. This is evident not only in their sound, but if you look at their Facebook page, under the "Artists We Also Like" section of the Info tab, they flat out tell you "We love everyone!!!" While I liked all the bands I saw, this one was my personal favorite, simply because of the fact that they had such a diverse library of sounds and textures (many of them coming from on-the-spot loops created via bassist Amanda Hamers and guitarist Rich Keane's pedalboards).

Next up was Crash the Satellites, who came all the way down from Jacksonville to play this benefit concert! Crash the Satellites is a 4-piece alternative rock band who sound (to me, anyway) a little like what would happen if you mushed together R.E.M., The Smiths, Blur, Dinosaur, Jr., and a little dash of Foo Fighters. Lead singer/guitarist Paul Paxton was a very real, humble stage presence who provided a great sonic vehicle for the rest of the band to do what they do best. The band put on a great set of melodic, thoughtful rock that was so tight and well-rehearsed, at one point in their set I had my back turned, and when they started up a new song, I thought the sound guys had put on a CD!

Finally came Fight Another Day, a 5-piece hard rock act in a similar vein to Shinedown or Seether, with some elements of classic Heavy Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Megadeth. This band was arguably the most virtuosic of the bunch, with both bassist Chris Berry and lead guitarist Shane Troutman taking full command of their instruments (sometimes simultaneously!). While the band itself was excellent, and while their songs were always tight, oftentimes brilliant, the highlight of the show had to be singer Matt Blevins' young son invading the stage multiple times, and even joining his father to help him sing at one point!

It really was a treat to have a big outdoor concert event that consisted entirely of original music. It lends a certain excitement and vibrance to the area, and it even further showcases the depth and breadth of talent our local scene has to offer. If you missed it this time around, don't worry; they're already in the planning stages for next year's Rock the Park. Do youself a huge favor and be sure not to miss it!

Here's your live music list for the week of May 24th-30th. If you have any additions or corrections that should be made, please do not hesitate to e-mail me at tim@gotonight.com. As always, any help with making this live music list better is very much appreciated. Also, be sure to visit GoTonight.com for additional live music info.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend, and stay safe out there!
