The Defense of Marriage Act is now in the spotlight.
Gay marriage appears to be the latest issue polarizing Americans, according to Dr. Marc J. Yacht in his latest blog. The issue has fallen into the hands of the U.S. Supreme Court after California's Proposition 8 overturned a recent ruling legalizing gay marriage under the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Yacht believes the controversy has as much to do with money as with morality. "Aside from the emotional satisfaction of being able to legally declare your significant other as a spouse, there are a myriad of legal issues involving transfer of estates after death, federal benefits and the sharing of job-related health benefits as an example as what is at stake for same-sex couples," he said. State Rep. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, is a longtime advocate of governmental ethics reform.
As the Florida legislative session gets under way, State Rep. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, is focused on legislation to put a stop to government corruption. According to a blog posted by Fasano legislative aide Greg Giordano, among Fasano's goals is to prevent the governor and members of his Cabinet from benefiting from official actions by creating Qualified Blind Trusts. By placing their assets into a blind trust, said Giordano, these officials will not be able to knowingly benefit financially from any actions they take in their official capacity.
