FHP: Motorcyclist Dies After Crash

Dylan Downey died in a hospital after the crash.

Dylan Downey, 21, was riding his motorcycle on Little Road in a right curve north of Trouble Creek Rd on Monday when he lost control of the bike, according to Florida Highway Patrol troopers.  The bike, a 2001 Yamaha, traveled into the center median and hit a guardrail. Downey, of Hudson,  was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, where he later died from his injuries.

Highway Patrol Holiday Crackdown Nets 548 DUI Arrests

Troopers issued 39,000 traffic citations between Dec. 12 and Jan. 2.

More than 500 Florida residents will head to court this year to face charges of Driving Under the Influence after a holiday crackdown by the Florida Highway Patrol. Col. David Brierton, director of the Florida Highway Patrol, announced the preliminary enforcement results from the patrol’s involvement in the nationwide Driver Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign Dec. 12 to  Jan. 2.  To take part in the campaign, the highway patrol beefed up its force by having troopers postpone administrative duties in favor of road patrols and adding reservists and auxiliary troopers to patrol duty. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that fatal crashes involving impaired drivers tend to increase during the holidays. That’s why the Florida Highway Patrol and local law enforcement agencies plan to step up enforcement through New Year’s Day. “Last year more than 1,100 people lost their lives in crashes where alcohol or drugs were involved or suspected, and thousands more were injured,” said Julie L. Holiday Man Killed in Pinellas County Crash

A BMW ran a red light at the intersection of Curlew and McMullen Booth roads, killing a 54-year-old Holiday man in a pickup truck, investigators said Wednesday morning.

A Holiday man was killed early Wednesday morning at the intersection of McMullen Booth and Curlew roads in Palm Harbor when his pickup truck was hit by a car that ran a red light, investigators said. Robert Henry Raymer Jr., 54, was headed eastbound on Curlew shortly after 5:30 a.m. when a BMW failed to stop for the red light on McMullen Booth and hit the pickup truck's passenger side, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Raymer suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene, investigators said. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. The driver of the BMW, 29-year-old Jonathan Peter Bytautas of Clearwater, was taken to St. Joseph Hospital with serious injuries. The vehicles collided with a third vehicle, a pickup truck, …

Traffic Crashes Up Slightly in Pasco

While statewide numbers are down, Pasco County saw a small increase in collisions in 2011, according to a new state report. We want to hear from you in West Pasco on what roads worry you the most.

The number of traffic crashes in Pasco County rose from 5,576 in 2010 to 5,610 in 2011. A total of three teen drivers or their passengers, ages 15 to 19, were killed in motor vehicle accidents in Pasco County in 2011. Three bicyclists were killed while trying to navigate Pasco roadways. These are just a few of the numbers released in the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles 2011 Florida Crash Statistics Report. The report was just released by the state and includes a variety of information related to roadway safety throughout the state and in Pasco County. While Hillsborough did see a rise in its crash numbers, the state witnessed a drop in fatalities, the report says. In fact, the drop between 2010 and 2011 in fatalities …

Trinity Teen, Holiday Woman Die Following Five-Vehicle Crash

The incident occurred Friday night.

A 16-year-old teen from Trinity died after the vehicle he was driving swerved into oncoming traffic Friday night, causing a five-vehicle crash that also killed a 91-year-old Holiday woman. Teen Matthew Joseph Capelo-Fine was driving a 1997 BMW 328 eastbound on State Road 54 near Lake Polo Drive in Odessa around 9:30 p.m. when the incident occurred, according to Florida Highway Patrol. Capelo-Fine lost control of his vehicle, crossed a grass median and struck a 2007 Hyundai Veracruz, according to troopers. The BMW then spun and hit two other vehicles. Two of the vehicles Capelo-Fine hit also collided with each other. A fifth vehicle was struck with debris from the accident, troopers said. Capelo-Fine died at the scene. The woman, Anna Davis…
