Cyber Bullying Forum Aims to 'Stop the Pain'

State and local leaders will be on hand to discuss the tragedy of cyber bullying and teen suicide.

A recent student suicide got people in Pasco County talking about suicide and cyber bullying. Now, the Pasco Sheriff, state lawmakers and mental health professionals are also readying to talk about those same issues. The public is invited to the Stop the Pain cyber bullying and suicide forum Saturday night, Jan. 19, at Redeemer Community Church at 9230 Ridge Road, New Port Richey.The forum starts at 7 p.m. Panelists will include Florida State Sen. John Legg, State Reps. Mike Fasano and Richard Corcoran, Sheriff Chris Nocco and mental health specialist Rick Kay. Hernando High senior Sarah Bell, who leads an initiative to stop cyber bullying called Unbreakable, will also be present. The forum is sponsored by Recover Pasco, crazy8freedom.org…

Sheriff Comments on Jessica Laney Suicide

Chris Nocco talked about the investigation into the suicide of Jessica Marie Laney at a press conference Wednesday.

Sheriff Chris Nocco took some time at a press conference Wednesday to address the recent death of Jessica Laney, the Hudson teenager who took her life this weekend. Jessica committed suicide Sunday. Friends say she was bullied online. However, the sheriff’s office has not received any formal complaints about her being bullied.  A reporter at  a press conference asked Nocco about the agency's investigation, and Nocco said that “Her death was tragic. At the same time, through our investigation, we’re realizing that there was no signs of bullying that occurred in the school.” Deputies have also reviewed Jessica’s online interactions, but “We don’t have any indication at this time that a crime occurred.” Watch the Youtube video of Nocco's …

Friends: Online Bullying Led To Student's Suicide

Jessica Marie Laney died Sunday, and now her friends are asking why anonymous social media sites remain online.

Fivay High School student Jessica Marie Laney, 16, committed suicide Sunday night, according to authorities.  She was found at her home in Hudson. Pasco Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Tobin said authorities took her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m.  Her friends have said she was bullied online. Tobin says the agency isn’t aware of any formal complaints about bullying. The school district isn’t either, but officials say they are doing a thorough review. The sheriff’s office is classifying the death as a suicide, but it is continuing to investigate it. Deputies are talking to family and close friends and reviewing social media sites on which Jessica had a presence. Tobin says it’s important for parents to be aware …
