Sheriff: We Need More Space to House Inmates

The Sheriff wants County Commissioners to consier giving a jail expansion priority over a plan to build a courthouse in Land O' Lakes.

Pasco County’s inmate population has swelled. In the first quarter of the year, the Land O’ Lakes Jail recorded an average daily inmate population that was about 11 percent over capacity.  Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco and his command staff want to make it clear that the Sheriff’s Office want more space Maj. Ed Beckman talked to the Pasco County Public Safety Coordinating Council, which focuses on jail issues, on Friday about the high numbers at the jail “We really need to explore NOW adding onto the facility,” he said. Nocco plans on making a request this year for funding to staff the third floor of the existing jail. He also has a long term goal of  seeking a new annex at the facility. Sheriff's Office Overhauls Inmate Account Deposit System

The change lets people pay online or over the phone, as well as at walk-in locations.

People who want to deposit money into the cash account of inmates incarcerated in the Land O' Lakes jail will be able to pay online or over the phone soon.  They’ll also need to pay fees for the privilege. The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office is overhauling its system for depositing payments into inmate cash accounts. Cash accounts allow inmates to purchase hygiene items like soap and toothpaste. The money can also be used for snacks. Authorities deduct a $2 subsistence fee daily from accounts, along with a fee for medical services rendered. Currently, people can deposit money into accounts by cash, money order or cashier’s check. They can mail the deposit to the jail cashiers or bring the deposits to the jail in person. Leap of Faith Shows Signs of Success for Pasco Inmates

The Bible-based Celebrate Recovery program was introduced at the Land O' Lakes jail in January—and inmates are singing its praises.

Before he went to jail, he didn’t know how to talk to God. That’s what one inmate at the Land O’ Lakes jail told his group during a Monday session of Celebrate Recovery, a Bible-based support program “for any hurt, habit or hang up.”    The program was implemented at the Land O’ Lakes jail in January. Meetings open with a prayer and upbeat, jubilant hymns. “I never thought they’d care enough,” Joseph Churchville, 43, said.  The program is available “not only here but when we leave here. ” March 25 will mark three years of sobriety for Churchville, he said.
