Nocco Advances, Fiorentino Gets Unseated in Today’s Primary

Turnout was an estimated 3.2 percent higher than the 2008 Primary.

The Pasco County school district will soon have a new leader. Incumbent Superintendent Heather Fiorentino was unseated by Republican challenger Kurt Browning in today’s primary race. Browning captured 20,022 of the votes cast in the race to Fiorentino’s 8,360. Kenneth Benson had 2,184 votes in his favor. Browning will now face Kat Lambert in the Nov. 6 general election. Despite Fiorentino’s landslide loss to Browning, other Pasco County incumbents fared well with voters. Sheriff Chris Nocco, State Rep. Richard Corcoran, Property Appraiser Mike Wells and incumbent county commissioners all hung on to win a thumbs up from voters. According to the Pasco County Supervisor of Elections Office’s unofficial results, a total of 49,477 ballots were …

Pasco Property Appraiser Says 40 Hours in Office 'Never Gonna Happen'

Technology allows Mike Wells to spend more time in the field, getting to know the county's neighborhoods and speaking to taxpayers, who also can reach him on his cell any time, he says.

Pasco County Property Appraiser Mike Wells said he hasn’t seen Channel 10’s “caught with his pants down” story, but he’s heard plenty about it. And based on the conversations he’s had with voters at three polling locations so far today, it isn’t swaying their votes. “Every single voter has been positive,” Wells said. “Either they say they are going to vote for me, or they just have.” Still, any kind of negative publicity at the last minute is not a positive, Wells said. Wells faces fellow Republican Walter Price in today's primary. The winner will go up against Democrat Allison Newlon in November. The 10 News story paints a picture of a public official who is rarely in the office; and on the day the reporter showed up at his home, Wells …

Pasco County Taxable Value 'Only' Dips by 2 Percent

New Port Richey property tax rolls decrease by 6.5 percent as local land devaluation continues for fourth straight year.

Times are bad when the good news is the taxable value of properties local governments assess on property owners to generate revenues has not declined this year as much as it has in each of the three previous years. But such is the case in Pasco County, where the good news is assessed values only declined by about 2 percent in 2011. According to certified taxable value statements released late Wednesday afternoon by the Pasco County Property Appraiser's Office, the county's composite assessed value declined from $20.727 billion in 2010 to $20.323 billion in 2011. The $404 million decline, just under 2 percent, is less than the 5-percent drop forecast by County Appraiser Mike Wells in January and the revised 2.4 percent decrease he projected…

Maybe the lower property values and lack of an impact/mobility fee will make NPR more attractive to outside developers and we will start to see a turn around. Lets hope anyway...   more ›
