Rainy Earth Day Gives Way to Sunny Skies

While the week is expected to have a wet start, forecasters say a dry stretch is on the way.

Rain and thunderstorms are in the forecast for the kickoff of the workweek, but forecasters say New Port Richey area residents shouldn’t expect that to last long. Monday’s rains are expected to give way to a week of rising temperatures and dry conditions. “The rest of the week stays dry until next Sunday (when there’s) a slight chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon,” said Richard Rude, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office. Highs throughout the week are expected to climb to into the mid- to upper-80s range. Lows will only fall to the lower 60s at the lowest. While a nice week is on the horizon, residents should prepare for some potentially hazardous conditions on Monday, April 22. Rude said Monday would …

Severe Storms Give Way to ‘Beautiful Weekend’ in New Port Richey

The potential for lightning, damaging winds and hail is possible, but forecasters say the bad weather will clear out by the weekend.

The National Weather Service is urging New Port Richey residents to keep an eye on the sky April 4-5, but says the potential for severe weather will fade as we head into the weekend. The forecast for Thursday, April 4 calls for “more off-and-on showers and thunderstorms through tonight,” said Paul Close, a weather service meteorologist. “There’s a 70 to 80 percent chance of rain.” Rain alone, however, isn’t all Tampa Bay residents are likely to see. “Some of those storms later today or tonight (April 4) could be severe with damaging winds, hail and maybe an isolated tornado or two,” Close said. It’s possible the wet weather will continue into Friday, Close said, but things should clear up by the afternoon. “The rest of the weekend is …

Pasco Prepares For Cold Snap

The county is opening a cold weather shelter as chilly temperatures move into the area.

West Pasco residents might want to pull out those jackets as the weekend gets under way. A cold front is predicted to move through the area this weekend, bringing with it temperatures that could fall into the 30s early Sunday, March 3, and again on Monday morning, according to the county's Office of Emergency Management. “These low temperatures and wind chills are dangerous to anyone who will be outside for a long period of time,” a media release from the agency states. “Children, the elderly and pets are especially vulnerable to the cold and extra care should be taken to protect them.” In light of the anticipated cold temperatures, the county has announced the opening of a cold weather shelter on both Saturday and Sunday nights at 6 p.m. …

Tornado Watch Issued For West Pasco Area

The National Weather Service is asking residents to be mindful of conditions as they go about their day, Feb. 26.

A tornado watch is in effect in the West Pasco area through 3 p.m. today, Feb. 26. According to the National Weather Service’s Ruskin office, that means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. Meteorologist Rick Davis says the threat of severe weather is possible later this morning and into this afternoon as “kind of a squall line will move through the area. The potential is there for isolated tornadoes and damaging wind gusts.” Thunderstorms are also possible. Davis urges West Pasco residents to keep an eye on the weather as they go through their day. If a tornado warning is issued for the area it means a tornado has been spotted and residents should “seek safety until the warning passes.” While today’s weather is less …

Expect Cooler Weather in West Pasco

A cold front that moves into the area overnight tonight is expected to deliver colder temperatures tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the first official day of winter and forecasters at the National Weather Service in Ruskin say temperatures should cooperate in the New Port Richey area. A cold front that is anticipated to move into our area tonight will bring showers with it, said Tyler Fleming, a meteorologist with the weather service. Tonight’s storms might not pass quietly. “We’re expecting some gusty winds and maybe some thunder with that,” Fleming said. As a result, a small craft advisory goes into effect for the Bay area this afternoon and tonight. Once those showers clear out, Friday should shape up to be much cooler than today with its anticipated high of about 80 degrees. Friday’s high is expected to be in the low to mid-60s. Overnight Friday is when…

Tropical Storm Isaac May Skirt Tampa Bay

It's too early to know with certainty. Tampa is still in the cone of possible tracks, but Isaac may arrive west of Tampa Bay early next week.

We're not in the clear just yet. At 8 a.m. today, Tropical Storm Isaac churned at sea, just south of Haiti, where a hurricane watch is in effect. The National Weather Service expects the storm to crawl at about 15 mph toward Florida, crossing Cuba Sunday morning. But hurricane officials are not anticipating a direct hit on the Tampa Bay region. If current projections stand, Isaac will arrive west of Tampa Bay after midnight Tuesday as a Category 1 hurricane. There is a chance that Isaac will impact Florida's panhandle next week. Of course, all that may change with the unpredictability of the storm as it edges closer to landfall, hurricane officials said. According to National Weather Service meteorologist Nicole Carlisle, the Tampa Bay …

Afternoon Temperatures Take Sweltering Up a Notch

You'll probably be grateful for a passing thunderstorm to provide some relief during the afternoons.

Staying inside if possible may not be a bad plan through the week as temperatures rise even higher than their summertime normal the next few afternoons. The weather pattern is familiar for the summer, said National Weather Service meteorologist Nicole Carlisle. Afternoon temperatures could creep to around 95 or 96 degrees in northeast Hillsborough and central Pasco counties. Toss in the soaring humidity and afternoons will feel like close to 100 degrees away from the coast, forecasters said. The heat index will make it feel like more than 95 before noon for the New Tampa area and all of northwest Hillsborough and Land O’ Lakes in central Pasco. New Port Richey could benefit from its location near the Gulf of Mexico and stay a few degrees …

Debby’s Track Shifts Again

The entire Tampa Bay area is now under a tropical storm warning.

Tropical Storm Debby isn’t doing a lot of moving in the Gulf of Mexico, but she does seem to have set her sights on a new target. According to the most recent projected path of the storm, Debby should make landfall sometime between Thursday and Friday in the area between Sarasota and Levy counties. The National Hurricane Center has put the entire Tampa Bay area into its Tropical Storm Warning zone, including Pasco, Hillsborough, Pinellas, Manatee and Sarasota counties. Flood and tornado watches also remain in effect for much of the Bay area, the National Weather Service wrote in its 11:30 a.m. update on the storm. Watches are set when conditions are ripe for the formation of severe weather, such as tornados. A tropical storm warning …

Dry Days Ahead for Weekend

Slightly drier air will make for little chance of rain and mornings a few degrees cooler than we've seen.

Rain will all but disappear from the forecast this weekend as some mildly drier air shuffles over West Central Florida. Outside of a small chance for a stray shower today, forecasters expect the rest of the weekend and start of the workweek to be dry. It will still be hot, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Colson, with temperatures hitting the low 90s today and Sunday over central Pasco and northeast Hillsborough counties. New Port Richey should be a few degrees cooler and reach only the high 80s. Outside of no rain, the main difference will be a small drop in the humidity as the dry air settles in behind a front that moved through Friday. “It won’t be quite as steamy,” Colson said. You may be able to notice a slight …

Heat Wave Makes Its Way to Florida

Though not quite as sizzling as the Midwest, afternoons are going to feel close to 105 degrees with little rain.

Any shine Tropical Storm Bret put on our weather a couple days back vanished as the storm chugged out to sea. Bret gave us a temporary break by allowing some dry air to move in and drop the humidity just enough for a couple almost pleasant mornings. A few places saw lows fall below 70, which is something most of us aren’t likely to see for a while. Now, though, we’re in for a taste of what the rest of the country has been going through as a stubborn heat wave spreads over the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Florida peninsula. Still, this is a peninsula, and all that water means we aren’t going to see the heat index rocket over 110, as it has in the Midwest. The high pressure area that has squatted over the center of the country and brought …
