Rollin' in the Dough Delivers Home-Baked Flavor

The new bakery in New Port Richey offers fresh baked treats for humans and dogs, too.

Kathy Schrader is in the business of baking. Schrader is owner of Kathy’s Rollin’ In the Dough bakery, a new business that opened at 5032 Grand Blvd. in New Port Richey. Early in the mornings, before the doors open, she drives to town from Spring Hill to bake a fresh selection of treats for customers. The display cases are full of the fruits of her labor and that of her friend Missy Donataccio, who helps out at the business. There are cakes and cupcakes and Key lime bars, truffle pastries, the occasional bread sometimes, tarts, cookies and pies, which are her specialty along with cinnamon rolls. She also makes specialty dog treats created from wheat and rolled oats. This is Schrader’s first bakery, but she’s no stranger to business or …

I have been going into the bakery from the beginning. I could not imagine anyone from the bakery would behave that way. Those ladies are very kind and appreciate every single customer. Its too bad a one time event would get that type of review. This business deserves a chance.   more ›

Is Unemployment a Concern in West Pasco?

Florida’s unemployment rate was up to 8.8 percent in July after two consecutive months of staying at 8.6 percent.

While state officials continue to tout an improving climate on the jobs front, seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in Florida rose to 8.8 percent in July. This, according to TBO.com, comes after two months of state unemployment rates staying at 8.6 percent. Both numbers are higher than the 8.3 percent natural average. July’s numbers, however, are significantly lower than the 10.6 percent unemployment rate Florida logged in 2011, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. That agency lists several states with unemployment rates much higher than Florida’s. Those that top the list for July 2012 are: North Dakota has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country at 3 percent. “Month-to-month numbers are going to vary, but …

Former Security Professional Sells Clothes Downtown

The owner of Sigi's Place reflects on what's needed to make downtown a destination again.

Joseph Sigismondi worked in security for years as an employee for others. Now he sells pre-owned clothing out of a storefront in downtown New Port Richey and is self-employed. “I love being my own boss,” he said. “It’s very stressful, though, not knowing if I’m going to have a sale or not, but it’s very exciting at the same time.” Sigismondi, a Hudson resident, is owner of Sigi’s Place, a store in rented space at 6214 Grand Blvd. Sigi’s Place opened February of this year. In the shop, you can find “gently used” clothing, including Abercrombie & Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle and Hollister. Sigismondi said he tries to cater to youths in the area, and he says that all prices are $10 or less. From Security to Clothing Sales Sigismondi …

Letter: Let's Cooperatively Grow Our Way Out of a Recession!

Local proponent for environmentally sustainable living has launched a coop that serves growers and consumers.

The litany of bad news about poor New Port Richey is stifling. As a resident in Holiday, I live just outside the borders of New Port Richey, but I love the quaint little town where my Gulf High, my alma mater, resides. The city by the river in my eyes has a lot of potential. I could imagine a thriving city where there is an abundance of activity and everyone is lucratively employed rebuilding our town for the future.  If you have followed my blogs in the past or if you search my name on the Patch, you can see my history: I've consistently been talking about how important local food is for our economy for over four years in the community. As a community networker, I've connected several hundred people to people and projects throughout the …

Eric has had a lot of positive impact on our community. We are lucky to have someone like you with a positive vision and energy to continue to come up with good solutions to not only a community but country wide issue(s). Way Clear to Negotiate New Direction for Hacienda Redevelopment

Legal review clears the way for talk of eastward expansion.

Since a proposal to renovate and expand the shuttered Hacienda Hotel hit a roadblock earlier this year, the New Port Richey government has been stuck in a holding pattern as it explored a different option for revitalizing the downtown historic landmark. Last week, New Port Richey City Manager John Schneiger heard news that he finds encouraging enough to renew negotiations with the project’s potential developer in pursuit of a new direction for the project. After a legal review, the city manager is ready to talk to the firm about an idea to expand the property northeast into the Gloria Swanson parking lot. The Story so Far.... In March, the city’s elected officials were poised to vote on a proposal that would have paved the way for the city…

A modern boutique hotel is not going to be useful in NPR because one cannot just stay in the hotel and feel as if it's a vacation or a restful sojourn from a stressful life. If this were further south on the Fl coast with a community appearance to complement the hotel such as the Don Cesar has or others in Sanibel, Nokomis that would be different. Please stop and think about these helpful …   more ›

Zoning Code Change to be Explored as Option in ARI Dispute

Council members are open to exploring a change to explore a change to the city's comprehensive plan and land use ordinance to accommodate a business that wants to make New Port Richey its home.

The New Port Richey City Council agreed Tuesday to give staff the green light to explore the possibility of changing the city's comprehensive plan and zoning laws to keep open the doors of Advanced Research Institute, which has been cited for violating city zoning regulations. Staff was instructed Tuesday to explore creating a land use category to fit the business. ARI is a company that performs clinical drug trials. It recently moved to 6716 Congress Ave. from its former location in Trinity. The Congress Ave. address is zoned residential and previously served as a temporary home for troubled boys, called Harbinger House. ARI is a tenant and leases the building from Juvinelie Services Program, which ran Harbinger House. The city attorney …

The City of New Port Richey's officials are clearly way our of toych with reality and what iot takes to make a city grow and bring in major business like this one , "Advanced Research Institute, Inc." Finding a Fit For ARI

Clinical trial company faces obstacles in making iself at home ast home in a rented building.

While New Port Richey officials are willing to work with Advanced Research Institute, the company may still face obstacles in creating a home for itself on Congress Avenue. ARI, which performs clinical drug trials, recently moved into a building at 6716 Congress Ave. Since changing its address from Trinity to New Port Richey, the company has been embroiled in a controversey surrounding the property's current zoning. City leaders agreed Tuesday to look into the prospect of changing the zoning regulations for the parcel. One challenge still remains: ARI leases the Congress Ave. address. The building is owned by Juvenile Services Program, which ran a home for troubled boys. The building’s owner has refused to sign off on a rezoning, but told …
