"I am angry now," said Councilwoman Judy DeBella Thomas.
New Port Richey resident Jon Tietz learned last week that someone broke the window of the SUV he drives. He also discovered someone had tried to pry open the driver's side door lock on the SUV. Someone busted a rear window on the SUV. A window of another SUV owned by the Tietz family was also smashed. Someone had tried to pry open the lock on a door on that vehicle, too. Tietz lives in the area between the intersection of Congress and Main streets and U.S. 19. On Tuesday, Feb. 5, Jon Tietz, his mother Carol and other residents went to City Hall. Members of the group expressed concerns about public safety during a city council meeting. Residents spoke on a variety of issues, including a desire for more street lights and safer alleys. They…

Explore the history of West Pasco’s first broadcast radio station.
Whether you've ever heard of the locally famous call letters WGUL depends largely on how long you've called Pasco County home. Not only was WGUL West Pasco’s first broadcast radio station, its local programming also became somewhat of a local legacy through the years by offering its listeners with a wide-variety of music and talk shows. And, still today a mere mention of those famous call letters brings back a flood of nostalgic memories for some who will likely proclaim, those were the days. WGUL got its start in August 1963, when the FCC assigned the call letters to Jasmine Properties Inc., whose officers were Sam Y. Allgood Jr.; Reginald Sims, son of early New Port Richey promoter George Sims; W. C. Tranter; and R. C. Tranter. Two month…

The gathering raised money for student scholarships and a memorial plaza.
Ronda O’Dell stood in the Gulf High stadium before the homecoming game and caught up with former classmates. O’Dell, 51, was one of about 150 former Gulf High students who returned to her old school and participated Friday in the second-ever Alumni Invasion, a two reunion event. O’Dell is a 1979 graduate of Gulf High School. She used to twirl batons at the football games and still has some of her majorettes costumes tucked away in the closet at her mother’s house. “We keep those hidden away,” O’Dell said and laughed. The Invasion is a relatively new celebration that alumni and event coordinated Bill Phillips, class of 1975, hopes to make into tradition, holding it every five years or so. Phillips spearheaded the first invasion in 2008 and…

Potential neighbors in surrounding single-family subdivisions don't want to see the multi-story rental units on Amazon Drive.
Opponents of an apartment complex proposed for a 40-acre site surrounded by a sea of single-family homes have set a meeting for Aug. 30 to rally people to their cause and raise money for an expected legal challenge to the project. A number of residents in subdivisions near Amazon Drive where the complex would be built object to proposals of the property owner, Clearwater-based Scherer Development LLC, which has submitted site plans to Pasco County calling for 102 units in six, two-story buildings. The proposed site for the Oaks Apartments at Riverside Village is east of Little Road and slightly outside New Port Richey city limits. The property is zoned for multi-family use, though it’s amid a number of subdivisions of primarily single-…

Gene Sarazen and the advent of the modern sand wedge.
With places like Innisbrook, Cheval, and Saddlebrook, here in the Tampa Bay area we are no strangers to the game of golf. But, did you know that Pasco County’s past history actually has a connection and claim to golfing fame? That connection is professional golfer Gene Sarazen, who in the late 1920s, considered New Port Richey his winter home. Locally, Sarazen not only managed New Port Richey’s Jasmin Point Golf Course, but it was here that his invention of the modern sand wedge, with steel shaft, came to life. From Eugenio Saraceni to Gene Sarazen Born February 27, 1902, in Harrison, New York, Eugenio Saraceni was the son of an Italian carpenter from Rome. With his family suffering financially, according to biographies, in 1910, at age 8…

What condition is the vacant historic landmark currently in?
As city leaders mull ideas relating to the redevelopment of the Hacienda Hotel, the once-famous landmark continues to sit empty. Since acquiring the building last decade, the city has provided little in the way of upkeep and maintenance, and now time and vandals are beginning to take their toll on the shuttered structure. So, how bad is it? How much has the building really deteriorated in the last six years, under the city’s ownership? These are the questions that I set out to answer amidst rumors of leaking roofs, collapsing ceilings, dangerous molds, and unsafe conditions inside the Hacienda. In 1926, when construction of the Hacienda began, plans by architect Thomas Reed Martin of Sarasota called for the most modern construction of the …

A petition drive has been started by those who oppose the project.
A developer’s plan to build an apartment complex along Amazon Drive in the unincorporated New Port Richey area is getting a cool reception from would-be neighbors. The legion of folks who came to Trinity Presbyterian Church Thursday for a neighborhood meeting on the complex were eager to voice their opinions. Everybody who spoke in the standing-room-only crowd voiced outright objections to or concerns about developer J. Chris Scherer’s plan to build a complex with 240 apartment units on 41 acres of property. The site is set blocks east of Little Road and is surrounded by communities with single-family homes. “It looks like it don’t belong,” one woman shouted at Scherer as he showed concept art of three-story buildings. “I would like some …

What can anyone do when they have the kind of slumlords who rent their run down properties to anyone who can breathe and give them a check? Neither the slumlord or the low-life tenant cares, and the same applies to some of the homeowners. Who should help clean that mess up?   more ›
