Man Spit Blood at Deputy, Nurse After Burglary Arrest

He fell while fleeing from Pasco deputies Sunday night.

A Holiday man faces multiple charges after initiating a foot chase with Pasco deputies late Sunday that ended with him spitting blood at an officer and a hospital nurse.  According to an incident report, deputies were watching the home of a burglary suspect on Sunday, when the man exited his home and refused a deputy's order to stop moving. Christopher Farrell, 33, began to run, leading two deputies on a foot chase east of his home at 3716 Beechwood Drive. Eventually Farrell "tripped and fell to the ground and still tried to get up and run away," the report stated. Farrell continued to resist a deputy's attempts to subdue and handcuff him, pulling his arms under his stomach while lying face down on the ground, according to the report. It …

Pasco Remembers its Fallen Heroes

A Hernando County deputy has been added to the list of honorees at the annual law enforcement officers’ memorial.

When the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office pulls out the stops tomorrow night to honor its fallen, a new name will join the list. The 35-year-old deputy from Hernando County died July 3, 2011, on U.S. 41 in Pasco. He was engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a felon when the accident occurred. Mecklenburg will join seven other law enforcement officers whose names will be read during the annual service. The memorial is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the Historic Dade City Courthouse, 37918 Meridian Ave. in Dade City. "We have been doing the Pasco Law Enforcement Memorial since 2005," explained Tobin, who also …

The agency is sponsoring three upcoming pill drops in Central and West Pasco. The drops take place at the following locations, according to the sheriff's office's Facebook page: The drops are designed to provide an anonymous, simple way for participants to dispose of  their unwanted, unused, or expired medications. Pasco’s $1 Million for Child Abuse Investigations is ‘Turkey,' Watchdog Group Says

Florida Tax Watch is recommending that Gov. Rick Scott veto the funding increase.

When Florida TaxWatch released its “2012 Turkey Watch” report, Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco was surprised to see funding for one of his programs listed on the gobbler list. TaxWatch has deemed the $1 million in extra funding the sheriff’s office would receive for its Child Protective Investigations Unit as one of its 159 “turkeys” identified this year. In March, the state legislature announced plans to increase the unit’s funding from $4.6 million to $5.6 million. Investigators with the child protective unit are civilians that investigate child abuse and neglect cases with sheriff's office supervision. The unit is funded by a state grant and does not rely on county taxpayer dollars. "It is extremely disappointing that any private group…

12-Year-Old Awarded for Work Gathering Donations to Help Children

Olivia Georgi has gathered toys, clothing and other donations for the Child Protective Investigations unit of the sheriff's office since she was in elementary school.

It started with being told to cull her stuffed animal collection while Olivia Georgi was in elementary school and grew into searching school lost and found rooms, hitting up neighbors and businesses for donations and even trolling the streets around her River Ridge home. Her finds are cleaned and fixed and can become a tiny nugget of comfort for a child whose world was turned upside down by a parent’s arrest or somehow becoming entangled with law enforcement. Children all across Pasco County have benefitted from Olivia’s efforts. Olivia has been bringing her found and donated items to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Child Protective Investigations unit for years. The division’s job is to take care of children whose parents run afoul of police, …

Sheriff's Office Gets 'Flashy' to Remind People to Buckle Up

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office took the buckle up message on the road during the Battle of the Belts.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office wants teens to remember to buckle up before they drive. That's why deputies recently visited high school campuses throughout the county during Battle of the Belts week. The annual event is designed to raise awareness about seat belt safety among young drivers and passengers. To add a little "flash" to this year's campaign, the sheriff's office brought along its crime combat vehicle to the campuses. It estimates some 4,000 students and parents were reached during the campaign.
