Operation Tennessee Blues Nabs Multi-State Drug Traffickers

Tampa pharmacists, a pharmacy owner and 90 people in Pasco were arrested.

A two-year, multi-state undercover investigation has resulted in the arrest of a Tampa pharmacy owner, two pharmacists, and more than 90 people in Pasco County on oxycodone-related charges. The joint, on-going investigation between the Pasco County Sheriff's Office and federal Drug Enforcement Administration determined that two organized crime rings, were selling fraudulently obtained oxycodone pills on the streets of Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky. The rings are called the Humphrey Family, based in Hudson, and the Garcia/Barber organization. Investigators estimated that 400,000 pills were sold, worth $4 million in Florida street value and $12 million in Kentucky and Tennessee because of stricter prescription drug laws in those states. …

You might not want flush those meds just yet.

The boxes are meant to help curb access to prescription drugs. Anyone can just show up and drop off their prescription drugs “with no questions asked,” according to the Sheriff’s Office. “We just want them off the street,” Sheriff Chris Nocco said in a press conference. Sheriff Cuts Spending, Increases Staffing In Proposed Budget

The sheriff wants to add two new squads to tackle prescription drug concerns.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco has released his 2011-12 budget request, asking the county for a total of $83.3 million. This is a 3.5 percent drop over last year’s $86.4 million budget, but falls short of the 4.5 percent amount county commissioners asked constitutional officers to trim. Nocco wants to add 10 detectives and two additional sergeants to the sheriff’s office’s roster to help address growing concerns related to illegal prescription drug use. “In 2010, prescription drug related cases rose to 64 percent of all cases generated by the vice and narcotics unit,” a sheriff’s office media release said. “In 2009, that number was 45 percent.” One of the proposed squads would focus on street level distribution of pills, doctor shopping …

Pill Mills Special Report: Addicted to Oxycodone

Once a promising business major at the University of Tampa, Sharlene Jamiel fell into prescription drug addiction. Her mother has been speaking out about the growing issue in Tampa Bay ever since.

Sally Jamiel sat on the steps of a Pasco County Courthouse in New Port Richey one day before Easter weekend waiting for her bubbly, outgoing daughter Sharlene to walk up. It was normal for Sharlene to take hours getting dressed, applying her make-up and fixing her hair. “Any minute now,” Jamiel thought. She sat with an Easter basket in her hand, filled with her daughter’s favorite things - chocolate ducks, Cadbury and Reese’s eggs - and tried to stay positive. Jamiel sat there for four hours, waiting, thinking, hoping. “I was going to do whatever it was to save her because she’s my daughter,” Jamiel resolved. Sharlene never showed up for her court order for a charge of possession of oxycodone. Her mother’s hope had turned into hopelessness…

While I can sympathize with Joe's sentiment, his first statement is something that hits on a problem that has been bothering me for some time. I see so many people confusing Fascism for Communism. I'm not trying to be obnoxious, I just think it is extremely important for people to really understand what those terms mean--without the meaning behind it, it loses it's power and becomes just another …   more ›
