A series of town hall meetings kicks off Wednesday, May 22.
Pasco County School Board members want to hear from New Port Richey residents as the clock ticks down for them to set a budget for the 2013-14 school year. To get input from parents, students and others in the community, the board is playing host to a series of town hall meetings. The meetings are designed to give residents a chance to ask questions and share their suggestions. The district is once again facing a multimillion dollar budget shortfall as it heads into next year. Estimates put that shortfall at about $23 million. County officials will be holding a series of meetings to gain community insight.
Pasco County Commissioners are looking for input from New Port Richey area residents on a variety of topics. Just to make sure they get the feedback they're after, commissioners are taking the show on the road, so to say. One of three May community meetings is set to take place in the New Port Richey area. The meeting will focus on several topics, including the county's strategic plan, its current budget and road maintenance needs. The meetings will also give residents a chance to share their opinions and ideas about the state of the county's affairs, according to the county's website. Plans to spike the positions from the Pasco County School District’s roster to save money are meeting resistance. What do you think about the move?
A cost-saving measure meant to help the Pasco County School District close a portion of an anticipated $23 million funding gap is meeting with resistance. Media specialists from around the county and their supporters don’t agree with a plan to eliminate that position in Pasco County schools. In fact, they came out in force to tell the Pasco County School Board just that during the March 19 meeting, according to The Tampa Tribune. School Superintendent Kurt Browning unveiled a plan to close an anticipated $23 million budget shortfall about two weeks ago. New Port Richey kids can put away the books and pull out the sunscreen. Spring break in Pasco County officially begins Monday, March 25. Kids don’t return to class until Tuesday, April 2, thanks to a teacher planning day set for April 1. The third quarter’s March 22 end means that teachers need a day to file final grades and catch up on paperwork. It also means that teachers do have to report to school on Monday, April 1 while their students get an extra day to play. Parents can expect to see those third quarter grades on April 8 when report cards go home, according to the school district’s calendar. Teachers and staff may get two days of pay back in their checks this year.
New Port Richey teachers tired of hearing bleak financial news out of the Pasco County School district office might be in for a surprise. The district thinks it may have found a way to afford canceling the two unpaid furlough days staff and faculty have endured since budget cuts have become a way of life for Pasco schools. Kevin Shibley, the district’s employee relations director revealed a way to save $3 million, effectively ending the need for furlough days this year, during a meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 6. The cost savings come from multiple sources – two of which would require approval from the United School Employees of Pasco union. Outstanding School Volunteer awards were presented Tuesday.
Two volunteers from New Port Richey and Holiday schools were recognized by the Pasco County School District for outstanding service on Tuesday. Schools district-wide nominate one youth, one adult and one senior volunteer to compete for Outstanding School Volunteer. The nominations are reviewed by a committee, which selects one volunteer in each category. The judging criteria includes years of service, extraordinary contributions and impact, according to the Pasco School Board. In the senior category, "Chef" Vince Blancato, a volunteer at Gulfside Elementary School, was chosen for his contributions to the health and wellness of Gulfside students. A twist on the popular book and movie series had Gulf Middle School students competing to make sure families at the school enjoyed a bounty on their tables this holiday season.
How do you get kids excited about a holiday food drive to help feed less fortunate families? That’s the question the organizers of Gulf Middle School’s ABC Food Drive faced down as the holiday season approached. Their solution: piggyback on a popular book and movie series that already has kids excited. Gulf’s own version of “The Hunger Games” kicked off in November. Throughout the drive, teams at the school competed to earn “Tributes,” which are competitors. The selected Tributes now get to compete in the school’s own version of the games, which take place today, Dec. 21 from 1 to 2 p.m. The fictional series takes place in the post-apocalyptic country of Panem where power is held in the “Capitol.” The nation’s districts are forced to …

United School Employees of Pasco president Lynne Webb brought a few issues to the table during Tuesday's school board meeting.
There were no emotional pleas from former employees at Tuesday’s Pasco County School Board meeting, something that had become common in the months leading up to the primary election. But there are “issues on the horizon” that need to be addressed quickly, United School Employees of Pasco president Lynne Webb said. Some teachers who did not attend voluntary summer meetings did not receive teacher’s editions of course textbooks, instead they were given access to the online version. Teachers' contracts stipulate that “the board shall provide when available from the publisher a teachers edition for every course he/she is teaching, Webb said. “Right now this is not happening.” Webb also shared with the board and media a letter sent home Monday…
